Started listening to Tom Waits..

I had no idea the eagles even did that song and i dont even want to hear their version now that I know.

Big tom fan right here. Everything from his spoken word poetry to the insane The Black Rider musical. If you work with William Burroughs you automatically win. I always like to hear peoples opinion on Tom when they first start listening to him and style they were first drawn to. Cause opinions on Tom can change pretty fast if one expects his style and sound to be the same through his discography. I dont know how far despro has dove into Tom but his opinion of him might change from hearing the Heart Of Saturday Night into an album like Bone Machine. Glad you have started the trip though Despro..Tom is the man!

Thanks dude, just settling into him again tonight. Gave me the same chills that Born to Run did the first time I listened to the album all the way through Like the whole "That's it! What i've been feeling such n such months has finally been said." Same type of feeling, I guess.

I'm not ready for his wacky stuff, I know that. My friend loves Waits and said tot listen to his first album and Heart of Saturday Night; more of Despbros style anways. I know I'l eventaully get into his more crazy stuff.

But man, listening to Heart of Satuday night all the way through for the first time.. I was floored!

Yah it's a smooth album I love it also. Closing Time and Small Change are good ones also in the earlier Waits style. Small Change has hints of madness a brewing though lol but its much more subtle. Blue Valentine the crazy Tom starts heating up even more but still a good coffee shop and cigarette feeling on many tracks. Then Heart Attack and Vine hits....Toms going elsewhere now lol. Them 80's..them 80's.

Okay I listened to the Eagles version because I am a sucker for punishment and was curious.Note I probably had my mind made up before I heard it but....... Fucking horrible cover...

such over production for a simple song. Fake charisma at all through the song (which is what turns me off from the Eagles to begin with) and it drags so bad. Don't get me started on the overly pretentious harmonizing. And that pedal steel guitar.... just doesn't belong and i hate saying that because i noticed Al Perkins played it on the song and Al Perkins is the shit...just dragged the song too much. AND WHAT IS WITH THE MMMMMMMMs WOOOOOOOS AND OOOOOOOOOS through the fucking song? Shitty soul less singers with bland voices always have to throw in shitty mmmmmmmms and ooooooooos and wooooos to make it sound like they are into the song...not my thing. Just garbage the Eagles should be ashamed of themselves.

hahahaha okay it wasn't that bad but I still prefer Toms version and not because I like him more than The Eagles. I liked the more subtle atmosphere behind Toms version. Just me..I don't need a lot of musicianship and over harmonizing for that tune. Like it more with the simple piano drums and guitar with Toms voice and simpler harmonizing..just hits me in the right spot easier. Really was the pedal steel guitar I didn't like the most.

This is always the lamest argument when someone gets butt hurt that someone else doesnt like a certain musician or musical group...such lame. Im glad you were so worked up that you had to go read wikipedia to try and draw some negatives towards Tom for this playground fight that is based entirely on subjectivity.

Yah poor Tom has had a horrible career though with his massive discography (still producing) an academy award nomination, 2 Grammy awards, Rock and Roll hall of fame, writing for broadway and off broadway musicals and small yet fun acting career. If thats the criteria we need to use. I am sure tom has and is doing pretty well for himself with the fan base world wide that has never heard of him still filling concerts and still discovering his music. I mean i sure needed to know about the Eagles cover before I heard Ol 55 and i guess the Eagles never heard it before they covered it either..thanks Eagles for covering one Waits song and making Tom what he is today and paving the way for his career!!!.

P.s.s the day I give 2 shits about record sales and global popularity as a measuring stick for a musicians acclaim and a reason for me to enjoy the music is the day I become Bee Gees, Alanis Morrisett, Mariah Carey and Celine Dion fan. Glad the Eagles have had good record sales, glad they have a good fan base...end of the day for me personally and the style of music i enjoy? Doesnt mean shit I still dont enjoy the Eagles very much and find most of their material boring. I am not an anti-popularity guy either there are so many top sale artists whom I love and always will.


But lets face it Eagles fans..when Don Henley himself is on record for saying The Eagles missed the mark on a lot of their songs..thats not good. Lets face it together and hold hands..we will make it through the hardship.

The best part of these talks is i am sure neither the eagles nor tom waits are sitting around giving two fucks about each other other than sharing a common bond to music and the industry. I doubt the two are yapping back and forth about who deserves the most acclaim. Besides they both know that all awards should go to eddie murphy for the deep and powerful lyrics to my girl likes to party all the time party all the time party all the time.
