Seems to me the point is not the idea that the White Sox are often stealing bases, but who the Sox are trying to steal bases with. Guys like Andruw Jones, Omar Vizquel, Mark Kotsay and others should NOT be trying to swipe bases.

But I would also say that I like seeing the Sox being an aggressive team for a change. Guys like Juan Pierre, Brent Lillibridge, Alex Rios ... I think those guys need to keep stealing bases because it has positive impacts on our offense. Just today, a SB by Lillibridge moved him into scoring position to tie the game. Steals in key situations like that are what made the 2005 team so good.

Yes, and the negatives brought on by all those players getting caught trying to steal bases can be more effectively placed on Ozzie's shoulders because those guys aren't proverbial base-stealers. More than likely, Ozzie had to specifically call for those players to attempt SB's, and the failures from those attempts can be placed on him. Even if Ozzie just gave those guys the "green light" in certain situations, he can be blamed because they are players that shouldn't even be stealing period.

The thing is, Pierre isn't even that good at stealing bases. Even he gets caught a lot, and his SB% is just above established break-even points for most base-out situations. Because of this, despite all the steals he has racked up, he has only contributed fractions of a single run (0.81 EqSBR) to his squad. So while he isn't costing his team runs per se, all his successes don't add up to much considering how often he gets caught.

If it wasn't one of the people that were directly involved in the post, then why should anybody care?

I will keep this simple.

ozzie is an idiot for running kotsay and teahan. I want the sox to be aggressive with only 2 guys, pierre and rios....i dont want anyone else attempting. I have no idea if pierre has the green light whenever he wants to go or if ozzie is choosing specific pitches at times, but there are those situations where the sox look lost out there when they are trying to steal. if i see fucking teahan, vizquel and kotsay try to steal im going to lose it.

as far as saber goes with this, 1 win.....feels like more though in all honesty.

i just wish they would run the two guys and thats it.

my biggest problem is with sacrificing........thats a whole nother subject....but thats where my anger is at right now with ozzie. how the **** are you going to have pierre at 2nd base with no outs and sacrifice.

my thoughts are all over the place today due to drugs because of a shitty sinus infection! yay!

Yeah, it's not necessarily the sheer amount of stolen base attempts that is the problem, it's the who, and it just so happens that those guys are stealing a lot of bases altogether. And my larger point is this: the fact that those guys are stealing so much is more aptly placed at the feet of Ozzie. Those have to be all his decisions.

As for the bunting, yeah it's pretty bad. The thing about bunting is, it's a one-run strategy. You are sacrificing the chance at scoring many runs for an increased chance at scoring many runs. Statistically speaking, and this may surprise you, teams should play for one run over many runs when they are down by one, tied or in the lead. That being said, the numbers say that bunting a man over from first with zero or one outs is always, always a bad move.

As far as metrics that rate bunting, I have been hard-pressed to find one that measures that alone. The closest one I have found is Equivalent Ground Advancement Runs (EqGAR), but that takes into account all situations in which runners may or may not have advanced on a ground ball, not just bunts, so drawing many conclusions from that is a little iffy (the Sox are at 1.68 currently).

What is interesting, though, is that of the 44 sacrifice hits (just bunts) the Sox have, 33 of them (75%) have come with a man on first base. That's definitely bad.

I wish i knew what goes on behind the scenes....and i am not talking about the scripted "the club" crap.....but the real thoughts and actions that go on through an entire game. i just wish i could be a fly on the wall for one game.

playing for 1 run imo in a 1 run game is fine....i just get pissed when we have 0 outs, we sacrifice the man on 2nd to third....have the next guy pop out or strike out...now with 2 outs with have a runner on 3rd. i hate that so much.
