Well think people are assuming you have to keep them kids to do the show. I would view it more as Wonder Years where we saw Fred Savage grow up before our eyes. No reason they can't transition this to them being high school teens with the nostalgia shifting to the 90s. That would pretty much mirror my childhood as I was a child/pre-teen in 80s and then a teenager in the 90s.

Stranger things played on pop culture tropes, but more broadly, it leaned on genre nostalgia - specifically, the kind of lost genre of (good) kid adventure movies.

People from that era have a deep connection to that genre, movies like goonies, ET, never ending story, the explorers, last starfighters, etc. Movies where a group of kids take on some fantastical adventure because adults won't listen. And they show kids can handle it while they grow closer yada yada

If ST follows the kids into high school, they will have to transition genres too. Maybe into the the John Hughes coming of age shtick? Though they kinda had that going with the nancy/one dude story line. Maybe the 90s slacker genre?

I agree and think the 11 story is pretty much played out at this point. They announced this would be the last season, so I think spinoffs would be more appropriate than continuing the current story. Which would be where what @tardigrade said should come in to play:

They should do this for spinoffs with new casts, new stories, new powers, new monsters, etcetera. Maybe explore more of the upsidedown.

They announced this would be the last season? I thought they said 4-5 seasons.

I've seen multiple articles stating 4 will be the last. Nothing confirmed, but all the reports indicate there won't be a season 5.

Yeah, they (the Duffer brothers) had originally mentioned "4 or 5" seasons, but I think 4 is the way to go. I think the way they wrapped up 3 was just fine for wrapping up the series, but I can't blame Netflix for trying to keep this thing going.

Being a child of the 80s, this has been one of my favorite things to watch in a long time.

Yeah that was my thought as well as someone that was pretty much the same age as these kids back in the 80s. Maybe move a bit away from Monster theme and onto tech theme. So stuff like Weird Science, Back to the Future, etc.s with some coming of age stuff from the 90s mixed in. The dude with no teeth already been shown as into tech stuff.

I believe hypnagogic is the word you're looking for, hippie.

I guess that's only been coined for music, but I would argue that Stranger Things did much of the same for TV, and It Follows and House of the Devil did it for movies, etc.

Agree with all of this. I used to think that Stranger Things was most like The Thing and Alien, but it seems to me now that its most like ET, with El being ET and Mike being Elliot.

I think a good transition genre would be to have the Stranger Things cast reenact St. Elmo's Fire...Nancy becomes a coke fiend, Will Beyers is recast as Emilio Estevez, etc.

Yeah, its ET crossed with goonies
and Cujo and Firestarter and every other 80s movie of that sort you can squeeze in. They pay homage to everything 80s

I find that enjoyable... I feel like they embrace the time period of the setting well.

And something else I've realized.... the time period contrast with so many modern or future-modern shows makes me enjoy Stranger Things even more.

You know me... I am a modern tech geek, but still the change of pace is fun.

Yeah, I'm not knocking it. It makes me miss the 80s, although I thought they went overboard with the nostalgia in season 3 (having some of them dress of like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man for all 8 episodes, the ToddFather, etc.). Just my opinion.
