Anybody else picking this up in two weeks? I just pre-ordered and got the beta which ends on Monday. The game feels great, it's a bit quicker than IV and less combo driven. I wasn't crazy about the art style at first but man, it really grows on you. I'm thinking about dropping $200 on a fight stick and really trying to get good at one of these games instead of just competent. Anyone else play the beta or looking forward to the actual release?

You're not really late to the game at all because it launched incomplete. A major update will be available in the middle of March, the servers will be corrected, (they basically already are) and rage quitters are starting to get punished.

Twitch channels of good players I'd recommend along with which characters they use. Anyone unfamiliar with high level play can get their eyes accustomed to it by watching them. If you want to know which characters can be used at their full potential feel free to catch them on stream or try typing in their name into youtube. I'll keep updating as much as I can.

Thanks for this, I've been wanting to get into twitch for SFV, I'm not a great player whatsoever but watching is an excellent way to learn.

Frame data is a beast that I'm slightly knowledgable about, just the basics really.

A lot of things seem overwhelming at first, especially for a casual like myself.

I did buy a MadCatz TE2+ stick tho, which wasn't cheap lol so I'll be around for as long as it takes, I hope.

Watching is one of the best ways to get acclimated to the scene. You get a feel for when you should use certain moves, what are a characters useful normal moves, at what space should you use certain moves, what distances makes unsafe moves safer, what moves give you the frame advantage on block, etc...

I wish I would have got a TE2+ stick earlier. The 2nd hand market prices are ridiculously inflated now.

Stick is much better than pad once you get used to it. Make sure you aren't riding the gate when you are doing your input motions to get the maximum amount of efficiency out of it.

Frame Data might seem to be a lot to take in, but really all you need to know for now is if a move is safe or unsafe while the opponent is blocking. You don't need to know every character's frame data either. Only the important tools for each character in relation to using your own character. That's how you begin to start learning specific matchups for your character and begin to learn the harder nuances of the game.

It also helps to know the frame data because smarter opponents will abuse their opponents lack of knowledge of the game and use Block strings that look safe, but really are punishable. That's when the frame data comes into play(But you won't have to get too much into this really until you start going against smart players).

As fas as pricing for the TE2+, it's $230 so yeah not cheap. I bought it on Amazon using a brand new Amazon credit card which gave gave an 80$ gift card that was available to use right upon approval, that brought it down to 150 and I traded in games towards the disc itself, so I made out alright.

When you say don't ride the gate, can you be a little more specific? I use forefinger, middle finger, and thumb, which I heard is the best, most common way to hold the stick. Oddly enough, it's always been easier for me to input commands when my character is facing the right side, but with the stick I'm more successful facing the left side of the screen.

I will def study the frame data, it will be very helpful.

Gate Tutorial

Riding the gate. For example you are Ryu and you want to throw a fireball.

When you do the Quarter Circle forward motion(236 or 214 on your keyboard number pad is a quarter circle forward motion depending on which side of the screen you are for future reference. Number's are how the community denote motion inputs) for fireball you don't want to be riding up against the gate restriction for the quarter circle forward motion because it wastes execution time. The Gate restriction = The Black outline on all of the gates

circle_gate.png
octagon_gate.png
square_gate2.png

Your Te2+ Joystick(The actual ball joystick part of the controller) comes with a square gate rectrictor by default which you can see on the far right.

The other popular option for fighting games is the Octagonal gate because it feels more natural when you are doing a 236 motion(Or any 'circular' motion) for example.

Circle Gates are rarely used except in old school American arcade games.

The square gates have an equal distribution throughout their zones so it should always take the same amount of pressure on the joystick to move regardless of what direction you are moving. In comparison to an Octagonal gate for example where if you are blocking down at an angle the space to block down and back(6%) is lower than everything else thus you might be only crouching down into the 14% area instead of specifically blocking down and back like with the corner of the square gate restrictor(11%).

Gate tutorial End...

The only time the stick should come into contact with the wall of the gate restrictor is when your are blocking, crouching, jumping, moving(Forward or Backwards), or you are using a charge character.

The point is that when you are performing a special move you don't want to be going so far to the point that the joystick is touching the wall of the gate restrictor because it is wasted effort. It'll feel very awkward at first and you'll want to do all your special moves where you are riding the wall of the gate restrictor, especially since a square doesn't lend itself to feeling as natural when you are trying to do Circular motions(especially Shoryuken motions). Something as small as this however can make your execution skill jump levels.

I think everyone starts out with a side that they prefer(I still love being on the Player 1 side). It's the whole left brain/right brain thing. Make sure that you practice equally on both even with the awkward feeling.

I'm probably slightly above average. I've just been playing SF games for a long time so it becomes 2nd nature. When I was in High School I used to run with some guys in the local Chicago competitive scene in 3rd Strike(Best SF Game fwiw). Fell out of it a little bit because I did not like SF IV, but V is back to the basics for Street Fighter so I know I'll enjoy the game.

I wasn't very crazy about IV either. V is a blast though, losing to a player you know you're better than can make you rage but other than that it's fun win or lose.

You're getting the game at a perfect time too, the March update should release hopefully next week if not the week after. I don't know how heavy you've been following, but the game released with a lot of stuff missing.

Yeah. Honestly I didn't really have a problem with the amount of characters available(Even though none are really jumping out at me yet except maybe Bison and Nash). There are balance issues concerning releasing a bunch of characters at the same time.

The lack of single player content though is inexcusable though. I mean no arcade mode? Lol. And it also doesn't have 8 player lobbies yet.

Which character do you main?

Yep 8 player lobbies and spectator mode coming this month, along with Alex of course and that damn costume shop. Which isn't a big deal but it keeps the game fresh. What I'm really excited for is the combo trials, that helps for starting a new fighter.

I currently main Ryu even though I used Ken throughout the beta. I feel like it's wise to get decent with Ryu first and then branch out. I'd like to try Rashid once the combo trials come out. I've had some nice ranked win streaks with Ryu, the best one was 9 straight the other night. I only really have 3 maybe 4 go to combos with Ryu, 2 I really like for punishing. It's been a while since I've been completely bodied by someone, so I take that as progress.

Nice. Ryu or Ken are the one's everyone start off with. They are perfectly rounded characters and you can accommodate a number of different play styles with them. You'll get bored eventually and branch out lol .

From observing high level play it looks like Ryu is the better of the two right now because of his normal moveset, but Ken has devastating damage potential. It's good that you are getting the combo's down though. I've heard the worst this game has so far is 3 frame link combos which is easy compared to the links in 3rd strike.

Get the combos down and learn how to hit confirm is what I would work on first. To really get better you have to work on the footsie and spacing game though. This game is all about whiff punishing. The hitboxes extend a lot during the active and recovery frames of moves.
