Any of you old farts every suffered from this?

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/tmj/symptoms-causes/syc-20350941

My jaw started clicking about a week ago. I woke up in pain and didn't really know why. Thinking maybe I started grinding my teeth or slept on it weird. I asked my wife if she punched me in my sleep but she denied. Now it clicks when I eat sometimes, but not all the time. It's only a mild pain so I prefer to stay away from the doctor especially since everything I read says it's apparently temporary. If anyone has suffered with this I'd appreciate some tips on how to make it go away.

As you old timers age is the bar going to be inundated with these "Do you have this ailment" threads? They should make a geriatric area of the forum.

It's funny because I'm probably on the younger side of posters, but apparently arthritis and osteoarthritis are risk factors and I know we got some oldies out there lol.

No definite cause for it, and for me I always assumed an association with an arthritic condition I have. I found exercising the jaw muscles, massaging them, even brushing the jaw behind your wisdom teeth can help alleviate pain. Whatever you do, do not go for a mouth guard at night. It will just exacerbate it, and edge you towards sleep apnea.

shit... I thought I sprained my jaw yawning...
I have had this for the past few weeks. Slowly getting better. No clicking for me. Just pain when opening wide.
I'm 44. Am I an old fart? At what age do you start?

I've had some sort of problem with it since my 20's.

The mouth guards push the bottom of your jaw in, which can constrict airflow, and give results similar to sleep apnea. Better to figure out why you are grinding, maybe stress, than to introduce new obstacles.

Massaging, stretching, brushing, etc help with the pain.

Could be stress I hope and it eventually just goes away. So you just like chill with jaw pain for your whole life?

You find ways to manage. It's not always present. I was unfortunate enough to experience it while still young, and somewhat naive, and saw an over zealous dentist who made a mouth guard for me for $450. It made things much worse. Then he wanted to send me to some TMJ clinic, which is when I said **** this, and relegated dentists to teeth only.

So, best case scenario I go to the doctor and they confirm I have TMJ and give me some pain meds.

Worst case scenario I go to the doctor and they tell me I have sleep apnea at the age of 26.

No, best case is you have mild bruxism, and it can be alleviated.

Age is only one risk factor of sleep apnea. Weight, family history, being male, having a thick neck, tonsils, or acid reflux.
