We're getting our first taste of what it's like to have your stars go down in the cap era. The reason it hurts so bad now is, obviously, that we don't have a half-dozen severely underpaid players on the team anymore to compensate. Campbell and Hossa make up roughly 22 percent of the available cap space this season. When they go down at the same time, there's really not a lot you can do. If Backstrom and Green go down for a few weeks, do the Caps have ready-made replacements in the minors? If Datsyuk and Rafalski go down, do Detroit? If Marleau and Boyle go down, do the Sharks? The answer is "of course not". No team without a bunch of guys on rookie salaries does.
Campbell will make a huge difference when he returns, just like he did in last season's playoffs. If you didn't notice it then, you won't notice it now, but that'll say more about you than it does about Campbell. The Hawks have scored 21 goals and allowed 26 five-on-five this season. Watch that deficit start to get erased as he gets back on the ice.
