PREVIEW:
Stars Go For Season-Opening Sweep of Hawks

Sergei J. Feldman - NHL.com Staff Writer

Season series: It's the second meeting in as many nights between the teams. Round one went to the Stars, who 2-1 in Dallas. Jamie Benn and Alex Goligoski scored in the second period for the Stars; Nick Leddy connected for the Blackhawks late in the third period.

Big story: For the Stars, 2011-12 is all about getting back to the playoffs after missing out last season by losing the final game of the NHL schedule. The Hawks, who got an unexpected trip to the postseason when the Stars stumbled, have bigger goals -- they want another trip to the Stanley Cup Final after winning it all in 2010. The Stars jumped out to exactly the kind of start to the season that they had hoped to in their home opener.

Team Scope:

Stars: Among the many changes made by GM Joe Nieuwendyk was one behind the bench. Nieuwendyk brought Glen Gulutzan to Dallas from the Stars' AHL team in Texas.

The opening-night win was a relief to the 40-year-old, who became the first coach in franchise history since Glen Sonmor in 1979 to win his first game with the team.

"It's a relief," said Gulutzan, who had never coached in the NHL before Friday. "Now I know I can win one. I thought the guys played really good. Chicago's a hard team to play against in your home opener because they're so pacey, they're well coached and they've got good skill."

Blackhawks: Among the big questions in Chicago is whether goalie Corey Crawford can have as strong a sophomore season as he did his rookie season. Despite losing on Friday, Crawford looked sharp with 31 saves on 33 shots. The issue, albeit early on, is scoring. The Hawks threw 38 shots on net, but only mustered one goal, which came at even-strength. The power play failed to convert on four opportunities, as well.

"It was one of those nights where you get behind 2-0 and we couldn't get that first one until it was too late," coach Joel Quenneville said.

Who's hot: For both clubs, look no further than the netminders. Crawford and Lehtonen both put their teams in the position to win, with each making 30-plus saves.

Injury report: Dave Bolland (upper body), Ben Smith (concussion) and Viktor Stalberg (leg) are out for the Blackhawks, while Nicklas Grossman (groin), Adam Pardy (ribs), Adam Burish (groin) are off the roster for the Stars. All injuries are day-to-day.

Stat pack : Stars defenseman Sheldon Souray registered his first point since 2009-10, after spending last season with the Hershey Bears of the AHL. … Quenneville fell to 1-7-5 on opening night.

Puck drop: "It's not the way we wanted to start the season, obviously," Chicago captain Jonathan Toews said of the opening night loss. "I think we made too many mistakes and gave up too many chances. We've got to play with a little more energy."

Today's streams as far as I can tell.

This one is a little odd as they have it listed as Chicago vs Dallas (hopefully it is not yesterday's)

This one requires Veetle to play it. Nice Stream @ 900kbs but it states that it is 'joined in progress'

Good Luck, Go Hawks!

Kruger up, Pirri down. Hopefully Scott plays on the 4th line tonight and they sit I Dunno. Move Montedor down to the 3rd pairing with Lepisto.

I would like to see this line up

Sharp-Toews-Saad

Brunnete-Kane-Hossa

Frolik-Kruger-Bickel

Scott-Mayer-Olecz

Seabs-Keith

Leddy-Hammer

Montador-Lepisto

I think the cobweebs are gone tonight and they light Lehtonen up.

Riddle me this....

Why the **** was Lepisto scratched for Scott if Scott is only going to play 3:00? There was zero reason for Scott to play tonight unless he kicked the shit out of Ott. I don't know what the **** Q was thinking icing Scott instead of Lepisto... what a joke.

And this is coming from the John Scott fan club.

Otherwise GREAT WIN!!!!!!!

Bolly 2 goals!!!!

That is refreshing, you are finally admitting Scott should not be on the team.

Obviously, reading isnt a strong suit for you'

I never said trade Bolland for him. I said they should look to get him though because he is unsigned/RFA wanting out, a center...and a decent/young player. And per Bolland's history - he can't stay healthy. Feel free to look at his history if you need help. He's an asset when in the lineup, of course/no shit. But does no good for the team when the back flares up and he's out 2 weeks.

People cry/moan about Q having to move lines - when it's done most when Bolland is out/hurt (which has about 25% of the season in his first 3 years) - because this team has 1 other center, in Toews.

What a foolish idea to try to get a 22 year old center to add depth for this team. But let's break out the tissues when Bolland is hurt/out of the lineup and there's line juggling/players playing out of position.

I'm all for the guy if he's able to play 82 - well, 81 now games. But, history says...he can't/won't. If he does..and they get another center - then the have 3 - which is called....wait for it....depth. I don't see a problem with trying to get insurance or depth so that Kane, Sharp, Frolik, Smith - can all play wing. Maybe even....now hang on here...as everyone wants Toews/Sharp/Kane together - is hard to do when those 3 are your other centers. Especially when Bolland is out. Don't you think now (and take a breath here), that if they had another center...they could play that line together AND still have Bolland/Bickell/Frolik....then Hossa/Brunette/Turris (or whoever)? And when Bolland goes down - they still can keep their top 2 lines together? Yeah....pretty fucked up idea.

And why Turris? No love fest for the guy, but right now - not many teams are going to trade someone off their roster at this point/this early. He wants out, is a center, is young, talented...don't know why it's such a foolish notion.

But you're right...all is well since he scored a seeing eye goal and an empty net. All the center problems are solved.

Not really... Scott > O'Donnell... but Lepisto should have sat for either of them.

Not tonight. O'Donnell > Scott.

Scott was HORRIBLE. You paint him orange and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between him and an actual Pylon.

And you know I dont hate Scott. He just sucks.
