Honestly, why do sports teams have to go to the Whitehouse? What is it that they do over and beyond other people that warrants the invite over them? Because they were athletes on a winning team? Or for politica....err marketin...err moral?

That is why I do not care that Thomas or any other athlete chooses not to go. Sure they decide not to go for political reasons, but then again there is no sensible reason they need to be there to begin with.

Much ado about nothing as it usually is...just seems to get more prominance from any media group that favors the party in office...which just riles people up unnecessarily.

He didn't "miss" it. That implys he missed the bus, plane flight or that he overslept and it was accidental. He chose not to go for political reasons.

I don't see the issue with it. He disagrees with the guy and wants nothing to do with him and to set it straight he didn't miss the event, he didn't attend. Missing it assumes he wanted to go and missed his plane or something

I didn't?

My favorite teams
  1. Portland Timbers
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
It sure did happen when GWB was President. Ozzie Guillen was one didn't attend for sure - he went on vacation at the time and said he disagreed with the president on his policies. A few others during the Bush years didn't attend either. And of course the liberal media trumpeted it as 'exercising their constitutional right'. But when an athlete snubs Obama suddently it's all about rocking the boat, upsetting team chemistry, being disrespectful, etc.

Amazing how even-handed political bigotry is, huh?

Like a team that had won the Super Bowl 26 years previous???

As far as I know, this is a non-story outside of Nuckland...

As I suspected. This thread was really more for bashing the Canuck's media. They are so paranoid and weird out here. They consider this a 'meaty' issue. What a bunch of knobs, anything to try to make themselves feel better or superior. LOL

I bet when I go for lunch that they are still discussing it today.

Seems like they love to blow up non-stories from other teams. IE Bolland discussing the Sedin twins at a bar.

Vancouver will never win a Cup until they start to realize that they need to worry about their own poop before blaming everyone else for stinking up their bathroom.

While management and players claim Thomas' right to free speech, not everyone agreed with his decision and statements.

"I obviously disagree," said Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference. "I have a different viewpoint. I think this is a wonderful country. It's done so much for us, so I think that's why we were so thrilled to go because we obviously have a different viewpoint."

"That being said, everyone has their own point of view and that's the country as well, right? Just because you disagree with or have a different viewpoint with somebody, it's not our job to look down and be harsh toward that person. It's their view, their choice. You can completely disagree with it, but in this country you have to respect it."

Ference has a strong connection with a group of local Army Rangers in Boston and he always participates as much as he can in a variety of military engagements. So having a chance to visit the president of the free world was a no-brainer.

"It's not like the locker room all of a sudden changed one day. It's the same personnel and the same personalities. We're all practically married to each other. It's not like there are too many secrets on viewpoints and personalities. Maybe it's interesting for everybody else to read on the outside. For us it's just another day. It's the same family we've had for the last few years."

So.... if Vancouver has somehow magically won by Boston's plane crashing, would Obama still invite them?

Chiarelli said he hoped Thomas' decision not to attend the White House event wouldn't overshadow the Bruins' day.

"We're like a family. We have our issues. You deal with them and move on, and try and support everyone," he said. "It may or may not. If it does … I hope it doesn't. The guys enjoyed the day."

Don't see how this is an issue. Not everyone believes the same way about the president and/or it's office as everyone else. I'd say if everyone did, or absolutely had to, then that's the problem. I don't see how it at all affects team chemistry or anything like that. Why would it? It's not like he doesn't want to play for his team.

This was a huge chunk of news up here for a while, Everyone saying Thomas was classless, and not a team player. Who cares? It was his right.
