I can throw a like geek .01 into the pot...

Stuff said above is true with spliters and exposed lines and such. The distance with the coax is not an issue in and of itself.

I can say if you are willing to spend a bit more money, http://www.speakeasy.net/ was a fantastic provider and gave excellent customer service. While they ARE smaller and do not have their own networks per se, they have always been diligent and thech have been very knowledgable and actually not lazy. The only reason I do not use them now is that I would be too far from a good net pop and I wouldnt get what I needed. They offer a solid ethernet over cable but that may be overkill for what a home user may need or want to pay for.

But at least is it another company that may be able to offer service outside of your biggies...

As far a Sat internet, it is a bad idea unless you are only using what your mom what be doing.

I wanted to switch to Uverse but of course, not available here yet. I think from what I've read and customers Comcast is just about the only way to go. Sucks but I'll continue to deal with them.

They have yet to call back after the phone call the other night. No surprise. LOL
I hate to say it, but ATT is the only one I've had worse customer service problems with than Comcast.

Yea, I absolutely loved speakeasy when I had them. Too bad I now live too far away from a CO to still use them, but I always had consistent and fast upload and download speeds. Faster than I have now. As far as customer service, always top notch. The best was right after I moved and I was moving my CO location with them. The guy on the line basically said that it would not be worth me spending the money on them anymore because of how bad my service would be from being too far from a CO. Seriously, how many companies would do that? To top it off, we moved mid month and when he cancelled my account he did not even charge me for that last month at all.

COMPLETELY my own experience as well. Not only that, their techs were very knowledgable and I did not have to waste time with "is your router plugged in". Not that it isnt needed in the geek tech assistance world, but the techs I spoke to understood that I had experience and understood what troubleshooting I had done on my side and we were able to troubleshoot quickly instead.

You do pay more though, but to me, it was completely worth it.

Yea satnet is shit. Even if you don't game, you are quickly bandwith capped if you start to download a lot of stuff. Not to mention slow ping times. You are better off using your phone as a router.

Cable is able to acheive higher download speeds, has better up/dwn ratio, but can lag under a heavy user load.

DSL doesn't have as high download speeds as cable (usually) and has a lower dwn/up ratio, doesn't relate to amount of users on at a time, but it does matter how far away from the station you are.
