I can throw a like geek .01 into the pot...
Stuff said above is true with spliters and exposed lines and such. The distance with the coax is not an issue in and of itself.
I can say if you are willing to spend a bit more money, http://www.speakeasy.net/ was a fantastic provider and gave excellent customer service. While they ARE smaller and do not have their own networks per se, they have always been diligent and thech have been very knowledgable and actually not lazy. The only reason I do not use them now is that I would be too far from a good net pop and I wouldnt get what I needed. They offer a solid ethernet over cable but that may be overkill for what a home user may need or want to pay for.
But at least is it another company that may be able to offer service outside of your biggies...
As far a Sat internet, it is a bad idea unless you are only using what your mom what be doing.
