A myth? I was watching the game go look at the game thread again. The Lions made the Bears look foolish that entire first half. Then they Played the entire Patriots game that way.

How about we start by giving the Patriots a little credit, eh? That game is what happens when the Cover 2 meets a fantastic offensive line and Tom mf-ing Brady.

The Patriots are a very good team, but it was an all-systems failure on the Bears part. It wasn't just Tom Brady picking apart the Bears defense, and the Bears were helpless. The Bears made numerous mental mistakes on defense, their offense reverted back to their horribleness, and Julian Edelman seemingly returned every kick for a TD.
This part, I agee with for the most part.
I don't care if you play the 1978 Pittsburgh Steelers...if you are down 33-0 at half, you aren't a playoff contender. Its not something you can merely shrug your shoulders at and say "Oh well, we played a tough team. We'll get em next time."

This part, however, is completely stupid.

Earlier in the season, the Patriots lost a game to the Cleveland freaking Browns, 34-14...yeah, they obviously aren't a playoff contender.

Were the Patriots down 33-0 at half? No, they were down 17-7.

ahh, so it's completely relative to just the score, and the score only. It has nothing to do w/ the fact that the Patriots are currently playing the best football any team has played all season, and that's who the Bears lost to...and we can't compare our loss to a good team against a good team's loss to a terrible team. If you're down exactly 33 points at halftime, THAT'S what eliminates you from playoff contention. Now I get it.

Look, jake, I'm not saying the bears are the best team in football...hell I've never said they played like they actually gave a rat's ass last week. They came out flat, and got stomped. To say they are not a playoff contender based on that one week is ridiculous though. We got housed by a good team. Teams lose games...some of them bad games...all the time. You can't invalidate/validate the entire season on one game.

Stop posting, please.

2008 Arizona Cardinals:
Arizona Cardinals at New York Jets - September 28th, 2008 - Pro-Football-Reference.com
Down 34-0 at halftime

Minnesota Vikings at Arizona Cardinals - December 14th, 2008 - Pro-Football-Reference.com
Down 28-0 at halftime

Arizona Cardinals at New England Patriots - December 21st, 2008 - Pro-Football-Reference.com
Down 31-0 at halftime (This is a snow game as well)

I seem to recall this team going to the Super Bowl and almost winning...

Since this is the only game that meets the critera, I'll comment on it. The Cards did come back in the third quarter with 3 unanswered TDs to make a game of it, 34-21.

But good job with the research. You showed one team in NFL history that fulfilled the criteria. This bodes well for Chicago.

Its the only quick example I can come up with. The only other thing I can think of..while not 33-0...is the 1985 Bears losing 31-10 to Miami at half time in their only loss that season.

Arizona came back cause they had a good offense with a decent enough OL and then, well, Kurt Warner.

Its no secret the Bears do not have a good offense and they have a terrible OL. So while its disappointing what happened to the Patriots, I'm not entirely shocked.

I'm not entirely shocked, either, but I just thought it was bad that the Bears were outplayed in all areas of the game. Looking at the probable NFC playoff teams, I think this is how the Bears match up:

Giants - not well. Giants can control the LOS and rush the passer.
Falcons - not well. Falcons are well-rounded and typically don't make mistakes.

Eagles - well. Bears always seem to handle Vick, and the Eagles have a high-risk/high-reward style on offense and defense that helps the Bears.

Saints - not well. Saints have playoff experience, and their quick passing game will most likely will give the Bears fits.

Rams - well. Bears do good at stopping the run, and if they can neutralize Jackson, I think Bradford folds under the pressure.

49ers - ok. I think Alex Smith's dink-and-dunk passing game could be somewhat effective against the Bears (especially if Vernon Davis and Westbrook are 100%), and the Niners defense has been vulnerable in the secondary, but can the Bears exploit it?

I'll agree for the most part...Bears defense played great against the Giants until the 4th quarter. But the defense pretty much spent the whole game on the field and juts about any defense is going to fold under those circumstances. But yeah, the offense was pathetic in that game (obviously). I do think the Bears can stay with the Giants, but whether or not they beat them is a completely different story.

Falcons are really the only team in the NFC I don't give the Bears any hope for. Any game would be in the Georgia Dome, the Bears have dropped their last two there, and well Atlanta is another team with a great home field advantage.

The Eagles, Rams, Niners agree there...Though I dont think the Niners have much hope at all anymore of making the playoffs. Also dont count out the Seahawks (who the Bears lost to in the regular season).

The Saints...We always seem to give Drew Brees problems. Will that still happen? I can't say, that Saints team is obviously better than the one we faced in 06, 07, and 08. But I just think on the basis we have given Brees problems in the past, that we could beat them again..and any game would be a Soldier and not in New Orleans providing Atlanta doesnt fall apart these last three games.

Other possible NFC Playoff teams are the Packers and Bucs. Well we can beat the Packers and the Bucs have yet to beat one team thats over .500 this year, so I think thats a win too.

I think the Bears can handle the Falcons. Their defense aint the greatest, so as long as or IF our offense shows up they could go toe to toe with them

The only thing that gives me a small amount of hope against the Falcons is that, with the game being on turf in the dome, the Bears defense would be that much faster and could steal a win on the road. But it'd take a supreme performance and our offense would have to make some plays as well.
