The Cowboys are smart and the Bears are stupid (as well as 30 other teams)

The Cowboys not only took randy gregory. A steal at 60.. But now signed lael Collins at 1.7 million guaranteed.

Gregory had some pot issues, which made him slide.. But Dallas was smart and got him at the right time.. Gregory before the draft was a projected top ten pick and one of the best pass rushers in the draft... the Cowboys realize that these players issues will blow over midway thru next season especially Gregory. No one will think about him smoking weed when he's going crazy on the field.. And Collins.. Who was never even listed as a suspect in the case of his girlfriend, will make the Cowboys o-line (which was already the best) even better..

The Cowboys and jerry jones are smart because they took advantage of the situation and got these players at LOW RISK and extremely high reward. While teams like the Bears and other teams were way to scared to even get involved.. Which I think is ridiculous.

Props to jerry jones.. He's running his team exactly as you should. And they Cowboys will no doubt have another great season.

They are smart for existing in a State with particular tax codes that favor athletes?

The Gregory move - wait and see how that turns out. Collins, probably every team was interested in him but it was up to the player to choose where he wanted to go. I would not call the Cowboys smart. I'm sure the tax code was a factor as well as him living in the south.

Were they the only team in on Collins? I didn't know that.
Certainly they got two potentially talented players. Maybe they are taking advantage of a market overreaction against guys with certain concerns and seemingly towards "football players". I still think teams are realizing just how important work ethic and leadership and character, and not being a distraction truly are to a team.

As a fan, I prefer to root for guys guys without the baggage. It's simpler, and we don't live in a time when a player having issues gets swept under the rug. Jerry can keep his draft. I would like the talent for sure, but I don't believe "that's how you build a team"

Gregory will never be a good player. 230 lb DE with a slow first step and motivational issues...

He could have went to any of 3 teams in Florida (no state taxes there) and been far more likely to be handed a started position than in Dallas.

Jerry Jones did an excellent job recruiting Collins. Invited Collins to his home and had Garret there along with Romo, Witten and their OL.

I don't know why a team didn't use at least a 7th rounder on Collins. Sure, he threatened to sit out the entire year, but I'm pretty sure the team who selected him could have negotiated a similar deal to what he received from the Cowboys. Of course, I'm ignoring the possibility that 7th rounders have a ceiling on the amount of money they can make??? I'm not sure on the rules.

It's really easy to say that players with character/behavior issues are a 'steal' when you aren't the guy who gets fired if they end up suspended by the league or in jail.

Gregory had some pot issues, which made him slide..

You have no idea what you're talking about. His "pot issues" had little to do with his slide because they were just a symptom of an underlying, and much more serious problem.

disliked for impersonating a mod.

And 'another great season' implies the Cowboys have recently had 'great seasons'. They had one- a 12 win season last year.

it's too early to say they're smarter. did they take more risks, hell yes they did. if this draft pans out for them then let's crown them. until then, they just have bigger balls.

I can see collins succeeding on that team because of the talent around him on the OL but Gregory just doesn't seem fit for that team.

First of all, Cowboys was just lucky that Collins wanted to play for them, and not one of the 31 other teams, who I'm 100% sure all tried to get him in some way or another. It's like saying that all the participants in a lottery are dumb, and only the winner is smart. No, he just got lucky, that's it.

Second of all, I agree that Gregory might be worth the risk with a pick that late in the 2nd round. But let's just remember that there was a reason he fell that far. It's not like it was a case of a potential top 10-pick just falling through the draft without anybody knowing why. It was a case of a top 10-talent falling through the draft because of NUMEROUS concerns about his person. He might be able to clean his act up, and for his own sake I hope he does. But he's also potentially one of those guys that flame out within a year or two, simply because he couldn't stand the pressure of the NFL. I mean, this guy partially smoked weed to deal with anxiety and the pressure of being a star in college - the pressure of being in the NFL is going to be a lot greater.

It's a little late to be introducing facts into this discussion.

But man oh man does he have long arms...
