The Cowboys are smart and the Bears are stupid (as well as 30 other teams)

Their 2 was much closer to our 3 and if Gregory was there, I'd say OK depending on his profile research but we needed a NT in 2 and without the risk. Gregory will not blow over by midseason. He's now in the more frequent testing program and will need to be cleaner than everyone else. He's also supposed to be a head case. Sure do like him between the lines.

UDFA can do what UDFAs do. When many want you, pick your fav. Don't see how the Bears had a shot at Collins.

How'd JJ do with Greg Hardy?

Players with 'character issues' rarely live up to their potential. Being a top class professional athlete in the modern sports world requires more than just ability.

It's exciting to sign any player with great ability and look past the baggage, but if they aren't committed they usually wind up letting you down eventually.

If you can't stop smoking pot even when you are about to be drafted by an NFL team and become a multi millionaire, it suggests a mixture of lack of self control and basic intelligence.

Great post.

I often like to think about what happens when it's 10 degrees in December and the team is out of the playoff race. Will a player have enough charachter tp do his job for the sake of pride like a Dan Hampton or Steve McMichael or will they just mail it in? Do our players have the right character?

The Gregory move - wait and see how that turns out. Collins, probably every team was interested in him but it was up to the player to choose where he wanted to go. I would not call the Cowboys smart. I'm sure the tax code was a factor as well as him living in the south.

Doesn't this go against everything the draft stands for? Realize it's a loophole but it's one that needs to be closed. Maybe force the alleged into a red-shirt year where they enter following years draft?

He wanted to enter next years draft but due to the current CBA he is not allowed. He either went as an UFA or nothing as far as I understand it.

Edit: And no it doesn't go against everything the draft stands for. Undrafted players, for whatever reason they aren't drafted, are free to sign with any team.

How is it low risk? They were drafted/signed with the intent on them being major contributors to the team's success! If they dont show up to play for whatever reason they have, the team suffers.

Collins already showed that when situations out of his control dont go his way, he reacts immaturely. I am happy that our team didnt sign him.

Fair enough but I think UDFAs are different than say a player who has projected first round talent and goes un-drafted because of an ongoing legal issue.

I don't think I'd characterize what Collins did as immature. He was a consensus 1st round pick who got caught in an unfortunate situation where it looks more and more like he was 100% innocent. This situation, which was completely out of his control, literally cost him millions of dollars. His advisors were just looking out for his long term financial interest, and it looks like it turned out the best for him, given the circumstances. It's just a case of making the best of a bad situation, imo.

Even without the pot bust and the late meeting show ups, with the latter not a red flag, but a fucking tornado warning horn, the guy was not a top 10 talent. There is a reason the NFL isn't littered with 6'6" 240lb DE's. If he adds 15-25 lbs, maybe, but that needs to be good weight and his frame is more power forward than thick legged NFL lineman. Adding that much weight without the assistance of Clay Mathews "trainer" is going to be near impossible.

Completely agree. I would go as far to say if he didn't say what he said, was drafted in the 4th round and then refused to sign the contract that that would have been immature. He was simply being honest and fair to the teams.

I don't get your perspective here. You're saying they should get to do the thing nobody wanted him to be able to do, because THAT would be a loophole. That would allow him to make the millions of dollars.

He and his agent screwed up by messing themselves up. He wanted to go back into the draft next year to make guaranteed Millions. Instead now he has a udfa contract for 3/4 years.

There is no reason the league should adjust a rule that allows Star talents coming out of the draft who have a reason to make teams scared to draft them, so they can pick the team to sign for for 15% of the money they'd get if they were drafted high... because that could of been happening for decades now, and it doesn't happen. It only happened this time because the player screwed up not getting what he wanted by not understanding those rules.
