So I'm a HUGE fan of ducumentary films. I really can't get enough of them. If there is a really good Doc you've seen, post it here! I'll start with a few of my favorites.

American Movie

This is the film that started my love for documentary films. I really can't say enough about this movie. It's about a very down on his luck man named Mark Borchardt, and his burned out best friend, Mike Shank. Mark always dreamed of making it big in the film industry, and has set out to make a horror movie. This film is incredibly funny at times, and incredibly sad at other times. You grow to love Mark and root for him. He's such a simple man, yet had so many beautifully profound moments in the film like this:

I was called to the bathroom at the cemetery to take care of something. I walked in the bathroom, and in the middle toilet right there... somebody didn't shit in the toilet, somebody shat on the toilet. They shat on the wall, they shat on the floor. I had to clean it up, man, but before that, for about 10 to 15 seconds man, I just stared at somebody's shit, man. To be totally honest with you, man, it was a really, really profound moment. Cuz I was thinkin', "I'm 30 years old, and in about 10 seconds I gotta start cleaning up somebody's shit, man."

And this:

Man, I got so drunk last night, I was trying to call Morocco. I was trying to get to the Hotel Hilton in Tangier. That's just pathetic man! Is that what you want to do with your life man, suck down peppermint schnapps and try to call Morocco at two o'clock in the morning? That's just senseless.

Not to be outdone, his burnout buddy says some things that will make your mouth drop. On the one hand, it's incredibly sad how drugs have ravaged his mind, and on the other hand he just comes off so sweet and innocent.

Okay, so I'm at this party, all right, and I have three hits of acid. So I drop one, and the next thing I know, I'm on the ground. So she dragged me onto her lawn, and then her grandmother came home and said I had to go to the hospital. So I woke up in the hospital and searched my pockets for the other two hits of acid because I wanted to drop them there. But they were gone because they had taken them from me. And they told me that it was just some blotter paper with some acid on it, and they told me I was gonna die. But they just kept me in there for a month, then told me I was the worst case they had ever seen, and let me go. Yeah. I've got a million stories like that."

One day I was partying in my basement and I always used to get, like, pissed off inside cause I would wanna party really heavy and no one else would, ya know? And then all a sudden Mark came over and, uh, either I had a bottle of vodka or he had a bottle of vodka, but anyway we were drinkin' vodka and I was so happy that I found someone who would drink vodka with me, you know? So, um and then, Mark would drink vodka with me all the time. We'd uh, you know, I'd go over there all the time and we'd buy a fifth of vodka and we'd share it, you know, and uh, that really made me happy.

Bottom line, this is a must see for anyone who enjoys documentaries.

The Imposter

Brilliantly made documentary about the disappearance of Nicholas Barclays. If you are planning on watching it, I highly recommend not reading any back story or even watching the trailer.

Terror At The Mall

Documenting the attack of 4 terrorists at the state of the art Westgate Mall in Kenya. If you cannot handle watching real life death, do not attempt to watch this film. It uses footage of the 100+ cameras at the mall as well as phone camera footage to show the absolute evil that can befall human beings. Terrifying and frustrating, yet it also highlights that mankind is not entirely a lost cause with real life heros among us.

The Keepers. It just came out on Netflix.

It's about a mysterious Nun's death in 1970 and goes into this huge scandal about the Catholic church and how they covered up for a Priest who was a pedophile and raped hundreds of women while being the Chaplain at a high school.

I recently watched several docs by Adam Curtis. The Century of the Self, The Power of Nightmares: The Rise of the Politics of Fear, The Trap: What Happened to Our Dream of Freedom , All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace, Bitter Lake, and his most recent HyperNormalisation. Not fantastic docs. Very discursive, and he glosses over a lot of points, and makes large assumptions that he does not really back up solidly. But all are interesting food for thought, and do provide a nudge to continue reading and understanding the last 50 years or so of geopolitics and western economies.

They have their annoying parts, and are nowhere near perfect, but worth a watch if you have the time.

A buddy of mine got me turned onto Tales by Light (on Netflix).

A good watch if you're a shutterbug.

Just watched it, disgusting what happened and how many people allowed it to go on.

Great thread topic.

There is a documentary called Twist of Faith about a man who was molested by a priest at the age of 14. He now has a wife and children, buys his first house, and he realizes that the same priest is his neighbor.

Most recent documentary I watched was called: Cowspiracy

basically a giant commercial for going vegan along with a doc about how if you eat cows you are killing the planet. It was meh. A funny side note, My massage therapist recommended it to me as she had gone vegan and was all about it at the time. A few months later I ask her how the vegan thing is going and she says "**** that shit!" I guess her energy was shit her skin was suffering all kinds of problems, so she is back on the meat again.

I preferred - Food Inc.

Incredibly serious subject matter, great recommendation, but I gotta be a dick about it. Was the Nun mysterious?

I'm going to hell.
