SPRINGFIELD -- Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan says state police must release the name of everyone in the state who is authorized to own a gun.

State police determine who gets a Firearm Owners Identification card, which allows people to own guns. The police have always kept the list private.

But Madigan's public access counselor released a letter Monday night saying the information should be public.

The Associated Press had requested the list of FOID cardholders but state police said that would violate the privacy of gun owners. The attorney general's office ruled that argument invalid.

State police officials have not said whether they will comply with the ruling.

There are Republican-sponsored bills in the Illinois House and Senate that would prohibit disclosure of the information.

First off, I own and will shoot. Now that we have that out of the way...

Yes, let's publish a public listing of everyone who owns weapons so that the criminals will know exactly where to go to steal what they desire and can not get legally. NOT!

WTF

The government already knows I own guns, and what kind. While it is true that publishing that info will give criminals (the ones who can read) an address list to hit for stolen guns, there is also another thing it does:

Shows the households who do not own guns. Think about that one and tell me which house you would rather break into.

What I am trying to find out here is what is this expected to accomplish? Smells like a "look what I did mommy" type of bill. Other than that I really do not see a purpose. Perhaps further "transparency" of information, but we all know that is pick an choose anyway. Personally I would like to have public availability of detailed tax reports for all elected officials. Why has that "transparency" never been proposed?

Illinois State Police Refuse To Release List

In a showdown over the privacy rights of gun owners, the Illinois State Police are refusing to release a list identifying all firearm permit holders in the state after Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan determined that the information "must" be made public.

The dispute, which soon could come before a judge, has been building since last fall when a reporter for The Associated Press made a Freedom of Information Act request to the police for the names of cardholders as well as information about the weapons each permit holder is authorized to carry.

But the state police, who safeguard that information, resisted as lawmakers and others raised privacy concerns. Critics questioned what public interest it would serve to let neighbors look up each other's potential weapons cache -- further, they warned that publicizing the information could put both gun owners and those who don't own guns at risk.

If the state publishes a list of gun owners, Republican Rep. Ron Stephens said, "You are by design also publishing a list of everyone who doesn't" carry a firearm.

Great post, +1

IMHO, I think they are still pissed about the hand gun law change in Chicago and now just want to **** with gun owners any way they can.

What if someone wanted to release a list of convicted felons in the state, would they be for that too?

Things like this are inacted by the PC, touchy-feely, "It is my duty to look out for your self interest" (you get the picture here) people that think this will some how shame a gun owner by having their name made public. Like their neighbors will shun them now or something. "Oh my God, did you see that, Tom Jones has a gun, we ARE NOT going over to their house, h emight shoot us in a drunken rage!!!!"

What fucking retards.

I just went today to see what the gun laws are here in Alabama. No permit required to buy or own. Not required to register. permit required to carry a handgun, not a rifle or shotgun. Guess once i switch over to my Bama license, I will be going and buying one.

I think this is a way to get all you right wingers to come out in favor of privacy protection. I don't think this list will be published. Maybe you guys will support more privacy protection for other issues.

Perhaps, but the bill is stating that the information should be public. Released or not that means I can request the information and get it. I just find this request odd, simple as that. Perhaps it is a bait, but she is a left-winger which usually means more "transparent" information...

People I know who have guns own them for protection. Not only for hunting. I wouldn't piss them off, let alone break into their house to take their precious. So if someone wants to try to break in and find the gun. I'm sure they will find it. But it will probably be pointed at them and the last thing they will see.

On a similar topic There is a concealed carry bill coming up in a a few weeks time here in Illinois. Call your reps. If you feel so inclined.

OF course, however by having a list of gun owners and addresses, you are also making a list of non gun owners.

I am pro conceal carry.

And I do not own a gun. Not a real one anyway. A few BB guns, but that's all.

You can still shoot an eye out.

Their is a bill being proposed in the state legislature right now that would make it illegal to release the info.

I discussed this with an attorney friend and he has a different viewpoint. Lisa Madigan is going public with this because she says she has to release this info under a FOIA request as the law is currently written. She is not wanting to have it

released but rather making everyone aware of what is happening. That is certainly different then the apparent news reporting on it and quite frankly, it makes sense to me.

Either way, the law needs to be changed to keep ownership private.
