Just thinking about JT O'Sullivan's recent call outs about how slow Keenan Allen was looking in the preseason game has me wondering what are our expectations for him this season?

He had 108 receptions, 1243 yds in only 13 starts last season which says a lot about the amount of targets he was getting and how bad the other Charger receivers were. That won't happen this year, so let's say 95 catches 1,050 yds.

Poles traded a 4th rounder and everyone has been complimentary of the move, but that would be a steep price to pay for a one year rental. KA is set to make $18 mil this year and has repeatedly said he wants an extension and to stay here. So what do we expect that new contract to look like??

My guess is 2 more years 40 million with incentives, that makes it 3y/$58M total with the Bears...

Who says Yay, & who says Nay??

I think we are looking too far ahead, but it remains the offseason, so what the heck. Once games matter, though, I would offer that we as a fanbase should be more present and just enjoy the season for what it is before projecting out future seasons. To be frank, I like Keenan Allen and would not be opposed to the idea of resigning him. A lot depends on this season, but keeping our QB flush with good, top notch targets is a priority. I think $20M is more than he would get on the open market... Mike Evans is a little younger and got $21M/Y on his two year extension, which is where I presume you are getting that 2 years $40M. I would presume he gets paid closer to what DeAndre Hopkins just got paid, 2Y/$26M.

But tied to the idea of paying him is playing time. Are you intending to pay 20M to a guy who will soon move to be the third most active target? Or fourth most, depending on how Caleb likes his TE? If Odunze is the man he is purported to be, I would prefer that the team hit the well and draft a new target instead of paying FA rates.

The one year rental is more to speed up Caleb’s development and maximize his comfort in the NFL. Odunze wasn’t a sure thing at the time plus having one of the premier zone beaters and route runners in the league at your rookie QB’s disposal is a god send. Not to mention being an on field coach to Odunze. Of course it would be great to keep him if he stays healthy. You’d want to time an extension with him to have an out when Odunze needs a new contract.

I think Keenan will need a hell of a year to stay here… or maybe the Bears as a whole would need a hell of a year. Otherwise, it might be hard to justify paying so much when we have other good weapons on offense.

If he’s playing like he’s been on the Chargers, you find a way to keep him on a 2 year deal with ideally mostly nothing guaranteed in the 2nd year. I unfortunately think he’ll want more like Evans money than Hopkins.

Poles is playing this right after drafting Odunze IMO.

You don’t catch 108 balls in 13 gameson accident, but Id want to see how he fits in the offense and how Odunze progresses before giving him big bread for a #2 WR.

If Caleb goes bananas and Keenan is a big part of it you obviously lock him up.

Poles is gonna look like a complete moron if Keenan becomes disgruntled mid season because he wants a contract extension.

It’s very similar to the reddick situation only Keenan hasn’t held out.

It’s an aging player that wants an extension, and he has injury history.

There’s nothing coming from Keenan to suggest he is or will be disgruntled.

Its also a different situation, KA is 3 years older and is getting paid a fair salary currently. (23.1m this year). Reddick is drastically underpaid for his performance the last couple years. 15m/yr is terrible for a guy who is 3rd in sacks over the last 3 years

He traded for Allen before he knew Odunze would be available.

Allen getting disgruntled at mid-season, even if it were to happen, leaves Allen with no leverage. He just becomes a FA anyway. He's also getting paid about $9m more than Reddick for this year. Edit: Bears already paid $5m of that, so $18m left.

The Bears can re-sign him or let him walk and get a comp pick. If Odunze breaks out I doubt they re-sign him.

One year rental and his game was never about speed. He'll show his value when needed. Also a great guy to have around for Odunze. Like a coach on the field.

Salary $18M cap hit $23M... Keenan said he wasn't taking a pay cut after having his best year before coming here, I doubt he's accepting 2/$26M

OK, so he can walk and go take a 3 year deal from a shit team or sign a 1 year discounted deal with a contender.

13m aint happening unless he outright sucks this year, he's likely going to get 18-20 range.

Yeah, that is the likeliest scenario, I think.

If the goal is to resign Allen, I would presume that Poles has him test the market with a promise to consider matching the best offer. And to that end, Allen would need to continue playing at his best to get a significantly higher offer elsewhere.

I could see the Bears keeping him if he plays well, stays healthy, and has a good rapport with Williams. I doubt it would be more than a 2 year extension. But if he wants the bag, I'm not sure Poles would be willing to pay that. And that's fine with me. A 1 year rental to help develop Williams with a potential comp pick in return isn't bad at all.

And we're going to have the Steelers' 4th rounder!
