If Booker, Dexter and Kiran look legit then you can justify it. Basically you need Dexter & Booker to be plus starters this year with at least one of them showing All Pro potential to justify it.

I'd prefer to go overkill with weapons and then drafting OL with high picks and trust the coaching staff can help identify, draft and develop defensive talent while they Caleb's life so easy for the next 4/5 years.

We need to see what he does on the field with this team before considering an extension. He is a luxury with DJ and Odunze on the roster long term. We still have many needs in the trenches and the money is likely better going elsewhere, no matter how good he is this year. Time will tell

Not that Keenan isn't gonna be good, but I would have saved the money and draft pick and just signed Tyler Boyd.

Just thinking about JT O'Sullivan's recent call outs about how slow Keenan Allen was looking in the preseason game has me wondering what are our expectations for him this season?

He had 108 receptions, 1243 yds in only 13 starts last season which says a lot about the amount of targets he was getting and how bad the other Charger receivers were. That won't happen this year, so let's say 95 catches 1,050 yds.

Poles traded a 4th rounder and everyone has been complimentary of the move, but that would be a steep price to pay for a one year rental. KA is set to make $18 mil this year and has repeatedly said he wants an extension and to stay here. So what do we expect that new contract to look like??

My guess is 2 more years 40 million with incentives, that makes it 3y/$58M total with the Bears...

Who says Yay, & who says Nay??
He has been in the league for 10 years, going on 11 and typically doesn't play in preseason. I highly doubt he will go full speed until the season starts.

Just read that Brier (or someone like him) reported that Allen reported at 230 lbs (vs 210 last year).....if true, not a good sign for an extension foe a 30+ year old

Maybe he should be TE1 vs Odunze??

From the moment Poles drafted Odunze, Allen looked like a rental. Then Poles gave DJ Moore a big extension. There's no way we extend a 33 year old guy to big money with those two guys already on the roster for the next 5 years. Which, is all just fine. Having him for Caleb's rookie year to help ease that transition to the NFL will be worth every penny. Then let him walk and grab a 5th round comp pick for him. It's all good.

It's about the skill, not the numbers. Quality plays, not quantity. He's an elite talent, he will teach Odunze, and he's got great hands, gets open. I don't need him to get 800/1200/12 I just need him to help us get first downs, touchdowns, and wins. And for that...you couldn't ask for a better player. He may be here a year, but I hope he's here for a few, transitioning from WR2 to WR3 as Rome ascends from WR3 to WR2. Then I see two WR1s in Rome and DJM with Keenan as a veteran presence. With Kmet/Everett and Swift, we will have a TON of options.

Next year, we'll target the OL with our picks. But in time we'll start looking for more young WR talent, but right now, we are set.

Seeing a lot of posters talking about 'let him go for comp picks,' pretending that the bears don't shoot themselves in the foot, offsetting compensation for comp picks. I remember Allen Robinson getting 15 mil per and James Daniels 9 and expected something, even a 5th or 6th, and they nothing because they signed bum ass Al Quadin Mohammed who offset the formula.

You don't get comp picks unless you lose guys and replace them with drafted guys or FAs who were cut/not eligible to count against the comp pick formula.

We'll have to see what happens. With an abundance of draft picks and plenty of up and coming talent that will need extensions in the next couple years, Poles might just opt to sign a couple low tier guys to fill holes or work the release market. We're approaching that stage where we won't need (hopefully) nor shouldn't be looking to sign big money free agents and just reserve that for our core guys.

Well....unless there is a reason. Spoiler: this article I read this morning says he is 20 lbs over play weight, but he doesn't look it on hard knocks.

I'm not opposed to starting a season like this for a formerly injury prone player moving to cold weather.

32 years old...I'm not sure how many more 1000-yard seasons he has in him.

I would prefer to develop younger receivers like Odunze moving forward.

Moore is the number 1 and Allen the 2 while Odunze develops. If Rome plays well this year, he will be the 2 next year and you let Allen walk and find a different veteran FA WR to be the 3 at a cheaper price. If Odunze fails to show anything this year, then you have to think about keeping Allen so that you don’t Mitch or Justin Caleb.

For a 3 you could look in the draft. We have 2 2nds plus whatever else Poles can do.
I would prefer keeping Allen and focusing the draft elsewhere but a 2nd round WR would be making chess moves ahead like Poles likes.

Any good vet WR is going to be as expensive as Allen and the bad ones are still bad. However if we could find a Robinson who wasn't going to be used as a #1 by the Bears that could be a long term affordable solution.

hell, tyler scott could even end up that guy. If caleb is the real deal scott should be open plenty deep this year

I liked the trade at the time and think it was the right call. Gives CW two legitimate NFL WRs while they bring Oduze along. If Odunze progresses well throughout the season, you let Allen walk and use the money along one of the lines
