You are mistaken. While yes your metabolism can slow down with age, You were never consuming 4000 calories a day without weight gain. You don't know how to track calories properly. The vast majority of people don't, and research shows people are terrible at estimating calories as well.

Believe me, I spend a lot of time in the literature. I'm not wrong.

I drank a LOT of beer ate a lot of pizza, didn't gain weight. My metabolism really slowed down when I got married, still drank beer and ate like a fatty, gained weight. I totally didn't manage my eating like I do now, and now it's pretty much routine what kind of portions and diet composition I consume. I admit I probably don't count very accurately, and you very well may be right that I consume more like 2500 calories on average a day, but this shit is for real and I have the pictures to prove it lol.

To survive? Shit.... water, a daily vitamin and some bread and I can probably live for a long ass time.

hahahahaha. I try getting in a minimum of 2,000 so I don't lose weight. But I honestly have no idea how much I need to gain weight. I drop weight incredibly fast... which is why I'm skinny haha

How much do you weigh and how tall are you that you can only consume 2000 calories a day without disappearing?

No it isn't. At a rest you are burning more calories than I am at a rest.

Wait, at rest aren't your muscles repairing themselves?

At rest my muscles are straight chillin'

There has got to be a differential there, right?

I don't doubt it. What you're saying is typical. I'm just saying your numbers are off. For example, yes alcohol has 9 calories per gram however it has a huge thermic effect as well. The science is intricate, but at the end of the day it's simple to get the results you want.

3200 calories is probably a decent start point. Weigh yourself once a week. If you're gaining 1-2 lbs a week you're golden. You'll have to reconfigure your numbers as you gain weight.

5'11+ and like 140-143. I'm pretty skinny.

And it sucks because I'm lactose intolerant and recently found out I may also be sensitive to gluten. So I've got to avoid a lot of foods and drinks that have a lot of calories in them which makes it harder to get in more daily.

At 2000 a day, I don't lose weight but i don't gain weight either. At ~2,200, I can gain like half a pound every three weeks. Ideally, I'd like to get in 2,500 a day, but like i said... the foods I can eat are limited and it's hard to get that in.

Done with my walk. Now I'll have a couple of beers and nacho chips. Then go lift and have more beer. Nice workout.

Tell us more about how a pound of muscle burns 50 calories a day.

You're right, what I was reading is not 50 extra, it was inclusive of the regular bmi in the subject. But it is true that adding muscle (among other things) does burn more calories. It isn't true that it's just weight = metabolism alone.

Yes, in fact it is. More mass = more energy used. Type of mass is irrelevant. This has been proven and known for years.

So getting back to my question, I would like to gain a pound of muscle/week for the next 17 weeks to add ten pct of my weight currently. What sort of diet would be optimal to efficiently achieve this goal? Once I achieve it, do I have to maintain that caloric intake?

You need to eat roughly a 500 calorie surplus. That is going to be a moving target as you go. Once you reach that goal are you going to try to lean out? You're going to put some fat on in the process most likely unless you're completely untrained going in.

But yes you will need to eat whatever your maintenance calories are at that point to maintain.

Idk how accurate these calculators are... but you can try them

http://www.prokerala.com/health/health-calculators/weight-gain-calculator.php

For me it recommends around 3200 a day for the amount of weight I want to gain. ****. I gotta find different types of shakes to make so i can just drink my calories.

HHM watch what you are eating bro, if you are slopping down pizza, you will probably put on more fat than muscle. I know when I bulk, I usually eat 6 meals a day. And that doesn't include a post workout shake or a shake before bed, so that puts it around 8 meals.
