Here is part of a PM from PMX on the subject since he's too scared to post any more.

And the Frolik would solve the PK? Holy shit. How about the goaltending's save percentage -

This year - .814% (Crawford....784%)

Last year - .902% (Crawford ....896%...Emery .906%)

11-12 - .861% (Crawford .829%...Emery .910%)

10-11 - .864% (Crawford .870%)

09-10 - .894% (Niemi .899%...Huet .886%)

How about the 6mil dollar goalie getting his save percentage up to .900% on the PK? He's 24th in shots against on the PK - so it's not like he's getting peppered (especially because he's played in so many games)

In the top 40 of goalies with shots against while SH, he's one of 3 under a .800%. He's seeing less shots this year on the PK (3.25per game)...than last year (3.83per game)

If he was where he was last year - (.896%)...the Hawks would be at 84% - which would be 10th in the league.

He's seen 88 shots

Agreed on the goaltending issues for the PK. Probably one of the biggest issues has to be poor goaltending. But, I also think Frolik plays a part in it.

The players in this system **** things up too, probably more than anything else it's that the guys have no trust in each other.

This is what I said a couple weeks ago, three things I think we are missing, in order of importance:

Biggest difference between this years and last years PK is Crawford's save percentage. He has to find a way to be better. Period.

Hjalmarsson and Seabrook were also blocking more shots last year as well, but that's more due to the system they are playing, and they really miss someone like Frolik. No one on the PK this year is replicating Frolik's ability to take the puck away on the PK. It's not even close. Saad may be able to be that type of player, but he doesn't get enough time on the PK to really utilize his skill set. Maybe that's why they decided to change things up, but I don't know.

Those are the three biggest factors I can see in our PK. Crawford, not playing a box, missing Frolik's puck pressure (yes, I am literally being that specific).

I think Crawford will improve... Raanta is more than capable of giving Crawford a rest, which he didn't have much of earlier in the season. It looks like it's catching up to him now, but that should pass IMO.

Blocking shots is blocking shots, it's a matter of just doing it. If they went back to a box they'd find more success in that area.

Replacing Frolik, again my suggestion is already on the bench, put Saad out there with Kruger.

Also, I'd like to mention that the Hawks have played the triangle +1 in the past and have seen success — the problem with doing it this year is that there is clearly not enough chemistry or communication. Triangle +1 is not an easy way to kill penalties, but when it works its because everyone is on the same page. Clearly they are not. So when shit isn't working, box it up IMO.

Frolik and Bolland were both key guys in that PK last year. They did a triangle for a lot of it. I'm not sure this years PK units really have that chemistry or enough trust in each other yet to play the triangle. Versteeg or Saad could help, maybe, but the bottom line is it's hard to get anything out of the PK if they are discombobulated with a difficult strategy and the goaltenders aren't making enough saves to help their confidence. It may be time to "K.I.S.S." it, Q.

I could not agree more that Crawford needs to be better on the PK. Last year when it was so stellar, the motto was "your goaltender has to be your best pk'er". That is the truth, and unfortunately there has been a huge drop off, and one of the biggest reason in the slip.

PMX has thoughts on that as well... here's the rest of the PM:

And...people crying about Bickell getting 4mil per...saying Bowman acted impusivley.

Wrong.

They didn't pay him for his 82gm regular season.

He is what he is for those 82gms. 20g/20a...give or take.

But...what he is?

12-13 - 23gms - 9g/85 hits

11-12 - 6gms - 2g/32hits

10-11 - 5gms - 2g/22hits

He's 6'4 240lbs

All these whiners "our pk needs to be better come playoffs"....well, come playoffs they'll need Bickell's 34gms - 13g and 139 hits.....that would be 31g/335 hits over and 82gm season. Is that worth 4 fucking million??

Only a fucking moron would think anyone that size can play a game at that level (or would want him to) for 82gms. It was shown with all his injuries through last year...he played through. He can get moved up/down the line-up and has the skill to play with Toews/Kane if needed....or will be great depth with Shaw/Versteeg

My post:

21st in GA (93 goals against).

Not too many 2-1 or 1-0 losses this season. Most are of the 4-3 variety.

Since the circus trip, they are 3-2-1, allowing around 2.83 goals/game (the OT is throwing my calculation of GAA off just a tad) while scoring 4.5 goals (tremendous goal support). The whole season has seen an average (34 games) of 2.74 goals against, so the last six games statistically (in goals against) is a tad worse if we compare the post-circus trip in relation to the rest of the season.

If you go by the last 6 games (post circus trip), it would make the team D very close to the 11-12 team, which had 238 GA. The six game sample size would put them at just over 232 for an 82 game season. That isn't good, it's average.

The 10-11 team gave up 225 goals against, and the cup team ('10) had 209 GA (2.54 GAA).

The 2.125 GAA of 2013 was plain amazing, and if it was an 82 game schedule, they would have allowed only 174 GA.

I know they're just numbers, but I find it interesting breaking them all down.

Best current record in the NHL, but 4 more games played than the Blues and Avs.

The stat that is most telling is the overall goal differential. The Hawks are currently at +36, which puts them on pace to be +89 for the season (the Blues have the same +36 with 4 fewer games played). That stat is better than the 2010 cup team (+62), and very close to last years team if you project the 82-game season (+90 projected, the team was a +53 through 48 games).

PSR

Can we also talk about these two teams?

In my view, the Avs have no defense, while St. Louis is really hurting for offense. Steen is having a monster year but lets be real, the guy career best in goals is 24 and his best points year is 51. He will shatter those this year, but even then you need more than one line to be a serious contender.

There defense is great, there is no denying that, but when you break down the centerman and forwards they simply need more production. They have also been healthy, what does this team become is Steen or Backes go down?

Lots of "what ifs."

Hawks could trade Kane, Toews for Turris.
