This one is pretty cool too. I only saw pictures of this before. I didn't know there were videos of it.

Thats odd. But seriously, I wouldnt let my dogs near those things no matter how friendly they seem, especially chained up.

That's fucked up, actually. The dogs are chained up, and it looks like they're not very happy at times... If that polar bear gets hungry or pissed, the dogs are fucking defenseless.

PBS had the OP on Nature last evening.

It also dealt with a goat that made friends with a horse. The horse died, and it affected the goat, raising questions of "do animals mourn."

I don't think it's even debatable. They definitely do.

This has nothing to do with interspecies affection, but since we're talking about awesome animals, I love the story of the dog being the seeing eye dog for another. I think there's actually 2 different set of dogs out there like that. One of them is a Great Dane. Don't remember the other.

I think a lot do, certainly your "pack" animals like dogs. I also have a friend of the family that trains and takes dogs to mass casualty areas to search for bodies. She will commonly make sure the dog gets to play with kids and activities of that nature because the dog, seeing too much death of his pack (in this case everyone, since the head of the pack {owner} cares) will cause the dog to stop being effective on the job to a full blown doggie depression where they will do nothing.

My cat on the other hand, wouldnt give a DAMN if I kicked the bucket and attentions would be won by the first person with a can of wet food.

The answer is yes. at least elephants do. It was on a documentary a billion years back but the matriarch of the group walked by the bones of her daughter that died the year before or something stopped and was touching the bones with her trunk.

Also from personal experience the answer remains yes. My male lost two "sisters" due to cars and he was mopey, he knew.

Somewhere this side of sanity.
I had a purebred Siberian and a big o black Lab/Goldie mix. The mix after having ACL repair had passed away due to gastric torsion. About a month later, we were out on a walk passed a local grade schools' ball fields when the Husky started going ape shit. We looked around for maybe a kid she wanted to meet as she was VERY social and friendly. Way off across the complex we finally saw the cause of her excitement. Some had brung their Newfie to watch the games. Our Husky carried on like nothing we had ever seen! Only until we were able to let her make the acquaintance of the Newfie did she realize it was not her "Mesa" did she actually settle down.

Do some animals mourn, you bet your corn flakes they do!
