I call bullshit on the compressed spring weighing more than the relaxed spring. Someone want to explain that one to me? Springs don't just compress on their own, they need something to hold them compressed. I think the difference in weight is a miscalculation on the weight of whatever is keeping it compressed.

Stored energy is not to be taken lightly! That was a physics joke, fyi.

I will never get a straight answer on whether or not a spring wears out faster in a magazine if it is compressed. I keep some mags loaded at all times and most unloaded. My theory: Just like a paperclip that you bend, eventually it breaks or loses its "spring." So I tend to agree more with the theory that loading/unloading over and over again is what makes them wear out, not keeping them loaded. However, I still wonder how long they can stay loaded and have the spring still maintain enough energy to load the last round into the chamber.

I would actually agree that a spring wears out faster when compressed. Just look at the springs on vehicles that are shipped over to the United States by boat. They often have springs that wear out prematurely. My GTO being a perfect example.

But isn't that bouncing around actually compress/decompress cycled over and over again? Or do they tie them down really tight where they don't move at all? (I'm asking, I'm ignorant on the shipping subject)

From what I understand, they tie them down so they are completely compressed and don't move. Obviously compressing and expanding has to wear on springs, because if not, you'd never have to replace them.

This may help a little with the spring question.

Thanks for the link. I don't like the words "approximation" and "only certain materials" or "within the load range". So, with that said, I still call bullshit. If it is such a minute amount that they have to approximate it or calculate it, then it isn't "real" to me.

I agree with you. I thinks by compressing a spring you certainly increase stress and tension, but from what I remember from physics class many moons ago, you cannot change the mass of an object.

I take grammatical issue with the "shark is the only fish that can blink with both eyes". What the **** is that supposed to mean? Did they mean wink with both eyes, or blink.... period? Isn't blinking with both eyes, just.... blinking?
