How perfect was tonight's game after this thread...

I hereby retract my statement although it's just so damn frustrating after a hard fought game to lose in a SO...

I still think they should make the SO team Toews Kane and Bickell

Yeah after last night I was thinking "three shootouts in fewer than ten games. If we aren't practicing that, WE SHOULD BE."

Grat effort last night. That pass by Kaner on Hossa's goal was SICK!

... Actually if you are coaching a team you ought to be coaching it for the win in regulation... keep the 2 points the other side gets none...

But then again some guys don't get why some batters try to hit behind the runner, instead of swinging for the fences too.

They ought to be working on their defense so they don't give up the sloppy goal that takes them to OT (although I realise yesterday they were the team that was coming from behind).

A point awarded for getting to OT is a bonus. . . in other words they got bigger problems than worrying about penalty shot practice.

Edited to add: which isn't meant to suggest that I think that their problems are all that big -it was meant in the relative sense only.

Speaking of giving it up late, Dunc was WAY out of position on that last goal. He was trying to make a hustle play so I'll forgive him but that goal never would've happened if he'd have stayed where he belonged.

A) Mid way or so through the 2nd is not "late in the game" - protecting a lead with about 5 minutes left in regulation is, or within a minute of the end of the 1st or 2nd is...

B) That one looked like Kane forced a pass to a guy that was covered by a world class winger (and future HoFer in Selanne) -who then picked it off- getting it to a linemate who made a great little give and go pass - and he was in alone. Selanne has made a career of burying those.

Plus it looked like part of a set breakout play to me; and Kane having all of that ice real estate ahead of him should have known a little better, not sure Keith was out of position unless one is playing rod hockey.

It's a fast game - sh*t happens.

Edit: Well why not since this has me going ---

Shootout practice being worthless--- in order to do it right you have to be aware of the tendencies of the opposing goalies (ie --Not Your Own)... so, unless you spend a lot of time analysing how an opposing goalie deals with penalty shots (and assuming that sort of material is out there) -you won't actually have that much material that's much use, available to you -- then you also have to practice for both goalies on the other team in order to be ready...

and then it only really makes sense for 4 or 5 guys -maybe 6 to be involved - which pretty much all takes away from the practice time for the rest of the team. Not to mention that while taking that time away from everyone else - it sends the message that failure to win is a possibility (well sure statistically) - but you want your guys in a certain mindset where winning in regulation is the only thing that matters.... there is no reason to mess with team morale.

-and I do realise this is so much wheel spinning on my part- and I think I will get back to not bothering any longer.

I wasn't talking about last night cross. I was talking about the one with 1:48 left against Colorado. My bad... should have clarified that remark.

Keith wasn't really out of position on that one. He went over and took out a guy, Leddy was the one who was completely out of position. Leddy was in no man's land there.

You could make an argument that Keith shouldn't have come across like he did, but atleast he took out the guy as planned, Leddy really needed to just slot over but he didn't.

Writer, I get it. I just felt like the puckhandler was so far out that Keith would have been better served staying on his own side and keeping that pass from happening. Having never played in the NHL though, I have to admit I can't really say with certainty unless it's OBVIOUS (like when Montador is three steps behind and losing ground)... Usually I wait for Edzo to tell me ;-)
