Of course we wont be able to have the depth on the forward lines that we had last year... but Im not worried. So far we havent lost anything that cripples us.

Yesterday's move provided some breathing room for the cap.

Huet will be gone, thats more breathing room.

Niemi and Hjalmarsson will be back. The defense will look very similar, with Hendry and either Boynton or a similar type of player on the 3rd pairing.

Forwards: Toews, Kane, Brouwer, Sharp, Hossa, Kopy, Bolland, Bickell, Dowell are locks to be on the roster at this point IMO. That leaves 3 more.

Ladd and Versteeg are still question marks to return next year. Im fairly certain that only 1 of the 2 will be here, although it would be nice to keep both. The best option that I see is to trade Versteeg for a decent 3rd line C (and something like a 2/3 rd pick and/or a prospect) and then pay Ladd, which would leave us with...

Brouwer / Toews / Kane
Sharp / Bolland / Hossa
Ladd / (Center from trade) / Kopy
(Winger)/Dowell/Bickell

With that 4th line winger job a competition between Beach(who, if he is nhl-ready, would most likely earn a spot higher than the 4th line eventually due to his scoring skills) and other borderline guys. Thats 2 great scoring lines, an above average checking line and an energetic 4th line.

Assuming we dont add a C via trade...

Brouwer / Toews / Kane
Kopy / Sharp / Hossa
(winger)/Bolland/(Ladd or Steeg)
(winger)/Dowell/Bickell

Its also possible that Dowell may be able to handle the 3rd line C job, which again would put Bolland on the 2nd line giving us 2 excellent scoring lines.

So settle down. We have a lot of options and I trust the front office to iron it out.

I'd be really worried for you if the Hawks traded any of their top 6 forwards or top 4 defensemen.

I thought the point of playing was winning it all ... that happened ... this other stuff was always going to happen based upon contracts and the current CBA.

Although I know sort of what you mean - like when the Hawks traded away Roenick and Belfour because Dollar Bill did not want to pay them (otoh -that was the team's top center and the established all-star goalie.) I don't think they recovered from that until about 3 years ago... it was that ugly.

Didn't Roenick leave through free agency?

Traded for Alexei Zhamnov and Craig Mills -was back in 1996 -the Hawks at that time would never let an impending UFA go without getting some sort of compensation for guys (Belfour was the same situation).

Edited: -they also got a 1st round draft choice - which was used on Ty Jones.

Russian and Euro skating skilled players like Zhamohi are the future of the league... that is what they used as their justification of the trade. While it has come true partly 10 years later, it still was a horrible trade.

Just glad those days are over... I was almost on the tipping point after every player that was good or I liked got let go. Those letting go of great players from Jeremy, Chellios, Amonte, Belfour, and others... I know some others weren't as talented but when Kyle Calder was traded I was on the verge of thinking they would never regain success. I was still hesitant when they traded Robert Lang after 07-08 and feared they weren't changing... but this is no gutting.

Correct, it's called being a victim of your success in a salary capped world. It bites, but at least we have a championship to show for it...this was going to happen whether or not we earned a Cup.

Well I'll give you Barker counting more than Johnson for that part of it... but what matters is the guys whos names will be on that cup.

Barks still counts regardless of his name not being on the Cup.
