Don't go changing your parameters for the conversation; sure, the people that invented sewers, sterile surgery, vaccines, and a multitude of other things made a far larger impact...but you just compared Prince to a garbage man, not to Alexander Fleming.

If your garbage man exists, does that mean that penicillin must?
The parameter was whether a garbage mans job contributes more to society than Prince in terms of usefulness. Princes entire contribution is non-tangible music versus the actual collection of refuse (unless we want to get into charity and then thou have the old kind donation versus poor lady's parable). I would agree I've way oversimplified things and one concept can't exist without the other (I.e. dreamer vs. Worker).

So, Prince didn't create an industry, almost unto itself? The capital he accumulated and spent wasn't more impactful on the economic situation of those in his immediate, or peripheral, sphere than the guy that happened to be his garbage man? Edit: oh, and he made some fucking solid music in the process...

Of course you can, you just have to believe in yourself more!

I love debate; it's entertaining as hell even if I don't believe in the subject. (I did in this case; I really do think humanity without expression might as well be algae; actually, we'd probably be less useful than algae).

Yet the members of Blink-182 roam this Earth with perfect health.

I firmly believe that Eliot Fister, the boneless boy in service of the many-faced shrub, will remedy that situation in due time.

For ****'s sake: CNN just aired a 20 minute segment explaining why they were "17 minutes late" reporting his death; which contained an excessive amount of whining concerning the journalistic practices of TMZ (justified) and every other cable news company that exists (hilarious and unjustified), while also complaining about "internet news." Apparently the typical media is feeling the shit after this.

No matter what anyone listens to, someone's gonna say it's complete shit. Arguments over something like music is pretty Special person to be honest. I just listen to what I like.

Other than in the limited sense of entertainment, how does Prince's music contribute to society? I'd argue that the garbageman contributes more to society than any artist in terms of a jobs usefulness.

But that's not to take away what he's done. He was a defining artist of a generation.

Apple to oranges dude

I agree. Taste is music is so subjective that it isn't even worth arguing about. I gave up on it long ago.

I do think that there's a bandwagon effect with music though. I feel like certain genres or artists gain popularity simply because a lot of people you're surrounded by like it/them.

That is quite prevalent in today's world...to find really great music you've got to search like a mother. And even then if they become popular, the producer assigned to them might take away their edge. We're in a very weird state of music right now.

Yup. I'm always searching for new bands, and every so often I find a good one. Well, their first album would be good, then the rest turns into some pop type shit with some good songs here and there. I hate it.
