So it turns out that he wasn't completely healed after all. I just don't get the stupidity of this with players, especially the younger ones. I will never understand it. You have your entire career in front of you, the sky is the limit, why risk everything? Is Crosby not a good enough example? Does he want to be another one? There are a lot of people hand wringing over Kane's drunken escapades but to me, Toews doing this is dumber than any of that bullshit.

its dumb. what Dr.s are letting him play and what training staff owners coaches etc. players are going to want to play thats the nature of these guys. its going to have to take action from those around these players to keep them off the ice.

forget crosby. the lindros stuff should be the example and how long ago was that? and shitty Gms like bobby Clarke should be the example of the higher ups not giving a shit.

Yeah I should amend that to include the coaches/staff that look the other way as well. You could sort of get away with that in years past, but not now. You want to create another poster child of stupidity with Toews? They seem to be well on their way. I could understand the players wanting to play to a certain degree, but once you've already experienced a concussion and being held out of the game now multiple times dealing with them, coupled with all the knowledge we have of them as well as all the stories of players struggling with them and the consequences of not waiting until you are fully symptom free, I don't really buy that as an excuse anymore. Get past the sports machismo bullshit and do what's right.

Everyone looooves to talk about how good a role model Toews is, about how good of an example he puts forth not just for his team but the NHL in general and kids watching at home. And I've always cringe at the thought of any professional athlete in any sport being thought of that way. But if it's so true that he is indeed that, why isn't he acting like one in this?

yup I agree. It's old fashion hockey mentality and macho-ism running the show still with these ideals.

We don't agree all the time Variable but we do with this topic. lol. I think outside of goalkeeping we tend to share the same views that old hockey minds need to step aside a bit now (I have an old goalie mind set).

Competitiveness sometimes gets in the way of common sense.

.....which then again gets in the way of competitiveness. As in unable to compete because you can't see straight.

Interesting that they are spinning this as something a chiropractor fixed. (Sentence below from the article.)

So was it a concussion AND something else...or is this sentence Archer's "classic mis-direction" and an excuse for Toews to step back into ... wait for it... the DANGER ZONE??? Que Kenny Loggins.

Toews spent last week in Atlanta at a chiropractic neurology facility where he says his problems were solved once and for all;

Sounds to me like he may have had a pinched nerve or something else that was giving him concussion symptoms. I know I've tweaked my neck before and gotten headaches from it.

Which begs the questions, did he ever have a concussion to begin with, or was whatever they corrected causing all his symptoms from the very beginning? I guess that's the problem with "concussion symptoms".

And did you see a neurosurgeon? Pain shooting down the arm or a sharp pain between the shoulder blades is normally a herniated disc or stenosis(arthritis or calcium build-up that is pinching the nerve) I know all that good crap.....had a 3 level cervical fusion done and my neck is half plates, screws and cadaver bones. And during that time never had the headaches or concussed symptoms(had concussions before) so something is not right. I also know and am a good friend and neighbor of a member of the Blackhawks medical staff and the crap these assholes write for sales is just that.......CRAP. If there were anything to it don't you think there would be lawsuits attached? And I'm surprised there are none.....These players may be able to call out the owners, league, commissioner etc..with no recoarse but when you slander medical professionals while it is them who lie it will only be a matter of time before we see the first one. Especially when they brag about it.

Being a young competitor growing up without all of this concussion intel. It doesn't surprise me in the slightest that these young guys want to play through concussions. They are still young and think they are invincible. You are taught from your first year of hockey about toughness to an extent. It only gets more intense as you advance through different leagues.

Does it make sense to other people looking at the situation? No.

Just an instinct of an athlete... it will start to lessen as more and more info comes out about concussions and the lasting effects.

The point is that he's already been through all of it already. He should know better by now. Everyone should know better by now just from all the stories coming out.

So what more will it take (for Toews) for that "instinct" to lessen? Another couple of concussions? A few more months off dealing with the after effects? He knows all the information, he knows the repercussions. Other than seeing it with numerous other players around the league and his own teammates year after year, he's dealt with it firsthand. It's just stupidity at that point, not instinct.

This is what is going to come of all this. More down time for the players. Why? the medical profession is now going to make mandatory down time based on their research because the players know through each other how to pass protocol early and get back to playing. Then to blast the medical staff based on their lies to them? Something is going to give as this is a serious concern in all sports and when the players lie then make everyone else look bad...there will be a mandatory time before they come back regardless the severity.

Well wait a second, I keep hearing from people "in the know" that the NHL protocols are extremely tough to fake out. That they go above and beyond the other pro leagues' protocols. So something isn't adding up. This person is never wrong. Never. Even when he's wrong, he's never wrong.
