There’s nothing else to do but over analyze pick 9. So I looked into where all the top players at WR LT and edge went. I did it just for myself but it’s more surprising than I expected so I’ll post my findings here.

WR
J. Jefferson 1.22
J. Chase 1.5
C. Lamb 1.17
AJ Brown 2.51
T. Hill 5.165
S. Diggs 5.146
D. Adams 2.53
C. Kupp 3.69
K. Allen 3.76
DJ Moore 1.24
M. Evans 1.7
St. Brown 4.112

LT

T Williams 1.4
L Johnson 1.4
L Tunsil 1.13
A Thomas 1.4
C Darrisaw 1.23
J Mailata 7.233
T Wirfs 1.13
K Miller 1.15
R Slater 1.13
T Armstead 3.75
T Decker 1.16
P Sewell 1.7
R Ramczyk 1.32
R Stanley 1.6
T Smith 1.9

Edge

N Bosa 1.2
M Parsons 1.12
M Garrett 1.1
TJ Watt 1.30
M Crosby 4.106
H Reddick 1.13
B Burns 1.16
W Anderson 1.3
T Hendrickson 3.103
M Sweat 1.26
K Mack 1.5
J Allen 1.7
D Hunter 3.88
A Hutchinson 1.2
B Chubb 1.5
D Lawrence 2.34

Evans and chase are the only WRs taken in the top 10 and only 5 of the 12 were in the first round.

LT and Edge are completely different. 11 of the 15 LTs were drafted in the first 16 picks. 13/15 were first rounders. 10 of 16 Edge rushers were taken with a top 16 pick. And 12/16 were first rounders.

As much as I want MHJ, Nabers or Rome. We will still need to find an DE sooner or later. I also don’t love the Idea of Braxton Jones being our mediocre LT for the next 10 years.

Point is, I’m optimistic about the bears. I don’t think we’re going to have a top 10 or 15 pick for a long time. If we take a WR at 9. It’s going to be next to impossible for us to find a pro bowl LT or DE in future drafts unless we trade up. Where pro bowl WRs can be found anywhere.

After looking this over my mind has changed. My want list went from
1.MHJ
2a.Nabers
2b Rome
4. Alt
5 Turner

To
1.MHJ
2.Alt
3.Turner
4a.Nabers
4b.Rome

One of the top three WRs in this draft are going to disappoint. You just have to hope it's not Odunze after the Bears draft him.

This is a good demonstration of the fact that skill position players are much more difficult to scout than linemen.

I hope that’s why Caleb was throwing to him. And that DJ Moore and Allen was also there to evaluate the kid to see if he’s got the goods to be a good WR in the NFL. Poles not just leaning on management to make an assessment.

Very good observation and I think you make a solid point. I do think you have to weight the fact that we are drafting a rookie QB and want to set him up for success. But with that said we do have two formidable receivers on the roster as it is.

I would probable have
1. MHJ - blue chip prospect that could be a geberational talent. You can draft top 5 every year and not find a better NFL ready receiver.
2. Joe Alt - If you can land the top OL in the draft at #9, you take it. It also helps your young QB and we need a swing Tackle as well as someoe to push Braxton.
3. Nabers - Logically, you make a better case to go pass rusher here. But I still would rather suffer on defense in order to help my QB as much as possible. Plus, I think Nabers is a better fit to move around as a slot receiver or out wide.
4. Top DE - Dallas Turner/Latu ' I'd consider trade down in this scenario.
5. 2nd DE - Dallas Turner/Latu

Personally, I don't see enough separation from Odunze to clearly want him over the top. OL and DE prospects. You laid out a good reason to go OL or DL instead. I think we could find a stop gap 3rd receiver elsewhere if we miss in Nnabers and MHJ.
