From these storms? They also had my niece in Columbus staying after work (hospital) and family on the PA/OH border praying. It was a bad system, well worth postponing a game over.

My best friend in high school was building a house in Washington and it was flattened. He was supposed to move in next week. Thankfully this storm happened when it did, because they are still in their old house which wasn't touched. Their family is very close family friends of ours.

How does that work with the insurance? Do they get a check for the supposed value of the house they built?

Insurance Companies assess the value of the house and you get that amount if it's completely destroyed.

I believe insurance claims are not taxable.
I also believe that the builders are on hook for the payment since the new owners may not have taken possession as of yet.

Wow, I hope it was at the point of being considered a house and insurable or by "building a house" you actually mean having one built.
My brother built his house and he would've been screwed if it was destroyed before it was finished (which took us 2 years) and transferred over from being building materials to being a house.
But for a business building it things are different and they should have insurance covering it at every step.

If it was being built that gives him a step up on everyone else as he's already got the contractor. Hopefully the foundation wasn't damaged and they can get it right back up (relatively speaking, I'm suspecting the government is enjoying their city lockdown too much and it's going to be too cold to start building by the time they allow it).

I believe once the foundation is in, you can build at any reasonable temperature.

I've only seen pre-fab go up this late in the year around here.
Water damage. You can't put up a frame and sub floor and then let it sit under snow or you'll be replacing all the manufactured wood and some of the solid wood after it melts.
You can get walls up and tarp it but ideally you get it sheathed and shingled before winter, then you can work inside.

Realistically we have 2-3 weeks of building weather left. The flattened houses probably aren't going to be started until spring. If Jester's friend's place was pre-fab or can be pre-fab with a pre-fab roof, that could go up any time because they can build it inside and then have the shell up in a day or two.
The ones who really need to get moving are those with slight damage but the government isn't allowing it.

Heard of someone who had to smuggle her mother out of a powerless nursing home in a work truck.

Seriously, people need to get a grip

This happened an hour before the game and was the cell that was headed to Chicago. Weather Channel is saying f3 but they always seem to downgrade IL, this kind of damage in OK would be f4 (this is not a low quality neighborhood with cheap houses).

A retractable roof does not a storm shelter make.

Downgraded to an F2, but that is deceiving b/c the rating does not take into account existing wind...which was already tropical storm force.

The problem in the Midwest is almost no home is even up to hurricane code, which they are now doing in Oklahoma etc. There is a means to protect against at least an F3 for existing homes:

Thoughts and prayers to those downstate.

Everything I'm seeing is still saying f4.

My brother's house has hurricane straps. Not all that are shown in that link but more than most have around here. The inspector even commented how you don't see the proper building techniques we used any more.

So messed up. I was at the game and my Mom was okay out by Joliet, but Manhattan IL got hit pretty hard. I think a tornado must have touched down.

Worse was the Plainfield tornado back in '90-'91. I was only 2-3 when that happened, but my parents still talk about that day and how bad it was. My dad says still he has never seen a sky so dark. Said when he got up and felt the air, you could just tell something wasn't right.

I somewhat storm chase whenever something is brewing in the area. Got a video of funnel cloud right by my house, watched a real cool storm front come in on a hill overlooking my town and generally enjoy it and am awed by the power. But this video was so sad and terrified me. I never, nor do I think anyone, wants to see something like this. It's truly awful.

Found out the F2 is the Pekin tornado.
That is the area where they usually downgrade because the houses are cheap (like mine).
If what hit Devonshire hit my neighborhood there would've been more deaths.

Only if you own it the house outright....If you have a mortgage, the lien holder get's the check and puts it in escrow to pay as you make improvements...

If you take cash settlement, then it will be a negotiated amount of the difference between the pay off and what is left...

Yep, East Peoria end. My brother is at the far Beverly Manor side of Sunnyland.

I figured out how you guessed Sunnyland, I don't know when you were here but Highview also fits the description of two towns claiming them for taxes now.

From a video I saw and knowing where the guy who died lived I'm amazed Westlake or Cherry Tree didn't get hit.

nvanprooyen, I'm not sure if this will work but I saw this link on FB with the area hit drawn over a map, http://prntscr.com/24xkuq

One of my Sisters lives in Sunnyland off of Summit...I remember when E. Peoria annexed them. When I grew up there Sunnyland was all part of Washington..I went to Beverly Manor Grade.

My other Sister lives South of Cherry Tree Center accross 24 off of S. Cummings Lane in that neighborhood, that backs up to Westlake...They said lots of damage in their area, the Condo's were leveled in on the end of her street, they were very fortunate ...I have heard Georgetown Apartments to the east were obliterated...

I hope for the best for you and everyone there...

Yep, Georgetown is supposed to be gone. It all started sinking in last night.

It's funny, Washington has their city wide lock down (getting more realistically lifted to the affected area now) and (completely unrealistic) curfew but they seem to have forgot half of Sunnyland is part of their city just like East Peoria forgets us.
Always having county zoning trying to hit me up and have to tell them it's East Peoria for zoning. Road crews have no idea who does what parts of the roads. It's a clusterfuck.

Got an email from our Representative talking about our neighbors in Washington. Even he doesn't know who he represents.

You guys think they are running ads in the Philippines asking them to donate 10$ to the Red Cross to help out Washington, IL.... not saying they should, just think it would be kinda funny like "Damnit Red Cross, your making us look like assholes"
