To exploit and desecrate Jagger's and Richards' classic lyrics, you can't always get the center you want, (but) if you try some time, you find you get the winger you actually need. At least Stan Bowman hopes that's the case in his situation.
Longing to add some help up front ahead of the trade deadline, the general manager of the
Chicago Blackhawks is willing to keep an open mind. Ideally, Bowman would like to acquire a top-six center, but the the
Chicago Sun-Times reports the "cost" for such a player would likely be too high. So the GM could settle for a versatile winger instead. Especially if young
Marcus Kruger continues to perform well in the second-line center role.
So far so good. Kruger did a sound job centering
Marian Hossa and
Andrew Shaw in Sunday's 4-3 win over the
San Jose Sharks. Before the weekend, the 21-year-old missed nine games because of a concussion.
"It was one of our better games in terms of all four lines going," coach Joel Quenneville said. "That's something we've been looking for and striving for all year ... Having Kruger back in the lineup helped us."
Alexei Ponikarovsky of the
Carolina Hurricanes could be an interesting (cheap) option for up front. The Blackhawks are also reportedly interested in adding a defenseman before Feb. 27.
