Or I should say lack thereof.

What did I receive on my doorstep this AM?...Duke basketball on the front page while Hawks are once again relegated to the back.

A few weeks ago the Illini women's golf(not even a sport)program decorated the front page of the sports section, without even mention of my beloved Blackhawks in the entire newspaper.

Last I checked, Hawks are still the only success story in town over the past 5 years.

**** Duke.

End rant.

Oh yeah, it's March...

Have they started the basket-hoops competition yet?

I feel your pain Sunbiz. We get the Trib too and noticed it right away this morning. It was an afternoon game too, not like it ended too late to put a cover together.
**** dat.

The recent late game against Phoenix as well, usually there is something written the following day even when the final score doesn't make the deadline.

But they didn't even mention they played in the entire sports section...like nobody was even assigned to cover.

I realize hoops are big in March, but relegating the Hawks to page 7 following 6 full pages of college should be for national publications...not a Chicago paper.

While we can all get our fill of Hawks news online, it's the lack of respect which annoys me.

Like the Blackhawks are not newsworthy until May/June.

Zacty. They take the Hawks for granted. They must not even watch road games to see that that Hawks are hugely popular nationwide, not just here.
Two Cups, years of sold out games, merchandise selling like crazy....damn shame they bury it.

My favorite teams
  1. Chicago White Sox
  1. Chicago Bulls
  1. Chicago Bears
  1. Army Black Knights
The only team in this area that gets coverage outside of making the postseason which this team hardly does anyways is the fucking Bears. Once the Hawks are making their run, more space and time will be devoted to them, after the Trib and Sun Times devote energy to Bears minicamp of course.

The Hawks are making their run right now. Even the Cubs seem to get better coverage, even before spring training.

And the NFL draft in Chicago, that will almost certainly relegate round 1/2 of the playoffs somewhere in between Golf and NASCAR.

Such is life for hockey fans.

Chicago sports media is basically a joke here for Hockey. The only good one was Tim Sassone (RIP) in the Herald, and now it's just a crap shoot. I wish sports radio would do more than just a 2 minute blurb about the Hawks, but they gotta spend 2 hours talking about the Bulls and Bears. Shit, I remember listening to ESPN 1000 DURING the basketball season how the Bulls should go after Carmelo. I mean, seriously? NBA free agency doesn't start for another 3 months, yet let's spend 2 hours talking about something that isn't and didn't happen...

Hawks should be first priority in this town until another team (sans White Sox) proves their worthy. Who cares about March Madness? Most overrated sports event along with the World Cup. One of the many reasons I don't read the Tribune.

I'd agree with you if everyone who went to the Cup parade were Hawks fans first. The truth is most aren't, and March Madness will always take precedent, especially with ND winning the ACC and Wisconsin winning the Big 10. Cutler farting on the Red Line will get more press than the impressive win over the Sharks. I've learned to deal with it.

I live in Springfield and the 'Hawks are regularly on the cover of the sports page (SJ-R). Well, they have to compete with the Blues and Cardinals, but still: Move out of the sticks, gentleman. :D

Fortunately enough (for myself), nobody seems to really follow the 'Hawks down here until April; sometimes not even until June.

Personally, I love the fact that the NHL doesn't get the kind of exposure that the NFL or NCAA/March Madness receives. You have to actively seek out 'Hawks coverage, or really any NHL coverage for that matter. In my eyes, this separates the pulp from the actual fans. See, I like to think of hockey as my own little hidden-gem -- pure; undiluted from the cancer that is mass appeal. Following this line of reasoning, and taking into account the amazing product the NHL puts forth perennially, one could argue that the lack of lame-stream media coverage (in this instance the Tribune) only serves to strengthen the integrity and in turn, foundation of the game.

Simply put, hockey is mine.

I feel NASCAR is an excellent example of this, as they too had a great product throughout the '70s and '80s -- and still do if you're willing to dig through all the shameless-whoring of sponsors, which I am not anymore. So what happened to NASCAR? Very simply put, Bill France Jr. was able to locate and tap into the aorta of mainstream consciousness. Great for revenue; absolutely awful for every other facet of the sport. As we've already noted however, revenue is the only thing that matters to NASCAR.

I'll cede the two examples aren't entirely analogous on the surface, but I feel the underlying sentiment of the two remain wholly concurrent.

And today's Trib full page cover - Start you're March Madness picks

So their basket-hoops competition hasn't started yet... Good, good...

Even though I abhor basketball and know absolutely nothing about any of the players nor their teams, I still get a child-like amusement out of filling out the brackets and tracking (somewhat) my progress alongside others.
