It used to be illegal to push the ball carrier but it was never enforced and they eventually took it out of the rule book.

Yes, they basically just reworded the part of what type contact or aid offensive players can and can't do.

The last time I saw it flagged was actually last year at my son's HS game when players did it with him. People in the stands where like, wtf, nobody calls that a penalty ever.

Also remember a much longer time ago when William Perry grabbed Payton as he was going down and carried him forward. That was a penalty then and still is these days.

It's almost as if OP still has the expectation of professional coaches making sound decisions and training their players to do the right thing!?

Us long time Bears fans long forgot what that is or that it happens in CHI.

The league has a competition committee that changes rules to keep the game competitive. Doesn't matter who it helps or who it hurts. They've been doing this for decades. My guess is they won't ban the play, they will go back to enforcing the old rule where a player cannot push another teammate for purposes of gaining leverage.

I think it could get banned but they will say it's for safety. They will link it to concussions or something.

There are three distinct reasons for the league's decision to potentially pass on making a change:

1. At least nine of the NFL's 32 teams would not vote for a potential rule change involving the sneak. In order for a change to be implemented, at least 24 of the NFL's 32 franchises would have to be in favor of it. Simple math tells you that they would not have enough votes to make an amendment.

2. Further, even the competition committee wasn't unanimously in favor of changing the rule, which is necessary in order to bring a rule change to the floor. There are 10 members of the league's competition committee at present.
