I logged into my Gmail this morning and went... "who the hell is alexbsmith?" - then I realized. :)

When I get new people following me on Twitter - half the time it's adult websites trying to lure me in and the other half of the time it's people from these boards who's names I just don't know... it's really the only excitement in my life.
So you are saying half the people you follow are adult websites, and the other half are IHN?

Well, I don't follow the adult sites... alas, they only want me for my money.

Besides, with some of the posters here, there ain't much difference.
why do so many people think their lives are so interesting that they need to give several status updates per day?
it's the same as posting to a message board or facebook or even replying to an email chain. if you're using twitter simply to post status updates and not interacting with other accounts, it's pretty much pointless.

the way to get the most use of it is to follow several accounts. it helps if you also follow some people your followers follow. phew. got that? this allows jako, ymono, beastkeeper and i to mock each other in turn, and if all our followers are following each of us, they get to keep up with each jab. or as puckjim said, it also functions as our own GDT for away games. good times. wheee!

howcho- i believe most of us here who get the most use from it have certain updates sent to our phones. this keeps it current, rather than only replying to things when you decide to log on to the website. here's what i do, if you're interested: i follow loads of people on twitter, but only allow my "friends" updates to go to my phone and a few humorous accounts that don't tweet too often. when i go onto the website, i catch up on any celebs i follow, news updates, etc. that way my phone isn't going off constantly with updates.

nana- shitmydadsays is rather funny, but for a laugh (or sometimes to feel kinda creeped out) i prefer veryshortstory

i'm @effing_maryo on twitter if anyone cares to add me there.

As a non-tweeter... Jim aren't you too old for this?

Tweeting isn't really any different than a message board.

You just get a limited amour of characters to complete you thought.

If you try it, you'll have fun with it.

I don't tweet at all but I just follow a bunch of sports writers and other sports people. It's not bad--I like it better than FB cuz people actually post relevant information(usually). I would actually tweet stuff but I don't know anyone personally on twitter.

I kind of did what any person with half a brain does when looking to set forth new knowledge on a previous topic.

It’s Not Just You: 71 Percent of Tweets Are Ignored

Ever feel like you’re talking to a brick wall on Twitter? That might be because 71 percent of tweets get absolutely no response from the world.

Toronto-based social media analytics company Sysomos scanned 1.2 billion messages that were sent in August and September 2009 to try and get some idea of the kind of conversations that are going on. They discovered that more than seven in every 10 tweets sink without any kind of reaction from the world.

Of the remainder, just 6 percent get retweeted, and 92 percent of those retweets occur within the first hour. Multiplying those probabilities together means that fewer than one in 200 messages get retweeted after an hour’s gone by. Essentially, once that hour’s up, your message is ancient history.

That leaves 23 percent of messages that get an @reply. Drilling down, Sysomos found that 85 percent of replied-to messages get just one reply, 10.7 percent get two, and just 1.53 percent get three replies. Similarly to retweets, 96.9 percent of @replies are posted within an hour of the original tweet.

It’s not clear how the company treated messages that were both replied-to and retweeted.

The company also commissioned an animated visualization of the data. In the video embedded below, the spiral represents time, with the size of the blue dot representing the number of retweets and replies to that tweet. Following one dot over time, you should see it slowly grow as it gets replied-to and retweeted.
