[quote name="Razzberry"]I know I've bitched about the ice before, so this article was a pretty interesting read:

http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=382946&src=149

Best part:

With nothing but the Stanley Cup finals on the agenda after Tuesday's concert, the ice should be excellent for the Hawks' pursuit of their first Cup in 49 years.

We all need to pray to god for sub 50 degree weather over the next few weeks... worth it, isn't it?

yea Stu you are 100% correct. It all depends on the weather outside. It was 90 today and you could tell into the game the puck was beginning to bounch. There is an event on Tuesday at the UC so the floor will be down at least for that.

Can't believe that Indian Head has lasted since September!!

If you read the article, the guy who manages the ice talks about how the weather outside doesn't cause that many issues, just other events do.

Usually Finland summers you have literally about 65-75 degrees no matter what time of day. Back about 5 years, we had a string of 80-85+ degree days and the ice we played on sucked ass.

I did read it and I know the guy who manages the ice. The warmer the weather the harder to manage it, because the harder it takes to cool the building.

It's called physics. Other "events" directly effect the ice, and since MOST hockey is not played at 90 degrees, the weather rarely effects it. Funny from June - Sept there is no ice. Hottest time of the year here in Chicago.

Yup. Exactly the same reason the ice is often difficult in Phoenix, Tampa, Florida... Typical warmer climate Cities. Large buildings are NOT easy to keep that cool inside when it's that HOT outside.

Puck really started to bounce later in the game today and there were no events, changing of the floors, ect in the last week. 22,500 warm blooded people and 90 degrees outside, causes ice conditions to worsen.

I understand physics, and I don't doubt it's harder to some degree, but he said it pretty plainly in the article:

"'The trouble this time of year is not the heat and humidity,' Ahearn said. 'We've got plenty of cooling capacity, as you can feel out there.'"

What is he going to say? "The heat is fucking us over since we're not used to playing into June!"?

The UC ice is NOT used to 85+ degree heat OUTSIDE which "Ahearn" also is not used too.

You are missing the point Razz. He's not going to come out and say "Hey with this warm weather the ice is going to suck", although that's widely known. Edmonton is said to have the best ice and preferred by most NHLers. Mostly because of the extremely cool climate.

Again the puck was bouncing all over today, primarily because the building was warm with 22.500 bodies and it was 90 degrees or close out side.

Most of the time it's the floor going up and down, no doubt about it. The weather is very little factor because by the time we are done playing it usually hasn't hit 80 yet.

There were about 2 or 3 passes in a row on one of our PPs in the 3rd period that would have led to primo scoring chances if they ice had been better.

That was exasperating till Buff buried the winner.

I read that back in the early 70s when the Hawks played the Habs in the SCF... in the final home game of the series at the old stadium it was 92 degrees outside. Not having the refrigeration we have now, caused a 3 foot high wall of fog over the ice.

Any of you old farts remember this?

Not really. The Aud in Buffalo was famous for fog issues during their final against Philly though.

I was teenager listening to the game on the radio of course, and do remember the fogg on ice. Jacques Lemaire was between the center line and blue line when he took a shot that Espo couldn't pick up because of the fogg 2ft off the ice......KILLER GOAL, the Pocket Rocket scored two more to beat the Hawks....in Game 7 of the SCF

I'm surprised to hear so many of the Hawk players complaining about how bad the ice is at the UC. It's got to be caused by the heat inside the building cause the ice freezes from the bottom up. Almost every rink has to deal with multi-purpose issues.

Thank you for the welcome.....I remember it like yesterday and am surprised no one ever mentions it. It was way hot that night and me and my buddy were parked with our girlfriends listening to the game.....talk about being HOT...LOL For the longest time I thought it was Richard that scored that goal....but it was J. Larmeire. I have a link about all the Habs and Hawks playoff stories and it's in there. http://blackhawks.nhl.com/club/mobilenews.htm?id=504070

Another 87 degree day. Does the temp outside effect the ice as much as 20k+ pouring in?

Maybe McD will do a promotional give away with Gillette Anti-Perspirant at the next game.
