My favorite guitarist of all time is Mark Knopfler, and maybe it's just me, but he never seems to get acknowledged as the virtuoso he is. Bob Dylan put it best when he said that when you're listening to Mark Knopfler, you're always listening to a duet with him and his guitar. He plays so effortlessly and I can listen to him play all day.

This is an 8 1/2 minute solo from his 1996 tour. Last time I saw him was around 2000 or so, and he was still rockin it.

Here's another one of my favorite solos. Maybe I'm just ignorant, but I really haven't heard anyone like him in recent times.

Knopfler often credited JJ Cale as a big influence, which leads me to my second underrated guitarist. JJ Cale (RIP) is also one of my favorites and you can definitely tell that he influenced Knopfler. Cale never really showed off his skills in the form of lengthy guitar solos, but it's evident just listening to him. I never got to see him live, which is a big regret of mine.

JJ Cale once said if not for Eric Clapton that Cale would be selling shoes

Lol, yep he probably could have bought a small island from the After Midnight royalties alone.

Btw, have you checked out the JJ Cale tribute album by Clapton yet?

Greatest Bass Player of all time? How about Carol Kayne.

She was part of the Wrecking Crew in the 60s which was a group of studio musicians in the 60s that were the real musicans behind the top selling songs of that decade. Think the Beach Boys or Monkees did their own songs? How about the Mamas and Papas or Sonny and Cher? How about the Phil Spector Motown Wall of Sound?

In their hey day the Wrecking Crew was recording 14 hours a day, 6 days a week. One year they had 9 number 1 hits. Carol Kayne was acknlowegded by many as the greatest bass player in the world. Here she is

There is this guy that plays on the street corner. He can play anything perfectly every time, and creates amazing music of his own on his handmade guitars that he built from tools that he made using the materials he found and refined in his back yard.

He's so under-rated, nobody knows his name.

Jeff Beck, John Scofield, Eddie Hazel and Michael Hampton of P-Funk, and Jeff Loomis come to mind when I think about underrated guitarists.

I love Knopfler and Setzer. Saw the Brian Setzer orchestra in London and hearing him play 32nd notes on Clash covers was a memorable experience. But seriously guys, I know I sound like a broken record but the best guitarist you've never heard of is Richard Thompson. If you don't know him do yourself a favor and get to know him.

Solo starts at about 5:03. You won't be sorry.

Hal Blaine was the main Wrecking Crew drummer (the other major one being Earl Palmer), and I've heard several people say that their five favorite drummers are Hal Blaine. He just played on so much stuff that people are shocked when their five favorite drum tracks were all the same guy.

As far as studio bassists, I'd still put David Hood, Duck Dunn and James Jamerson ahead of Carol Kaye. I especially like Hood. He has just as diverse a resume, and I think he's just a better player. I'm not knocking Kaye, though. I think she's great. I just like the other guys a bit more.

This is probably my favorite track with David Hood on bass and Roger Hawkins on drums.

Eddie Hazel was the first guy I thought of when I saw the thread title. I normally despise extended solos, but I really like "Maggot Brain."

The purpose of my comments is not to identify "the best" as that's subjective. It's to get people to know extraordinary players they have never heard of before
