Franchisers are pulling nearly all of the weight for Hollywood. Or am I the only one that sees that.

Pretty much. But I think that has more to do with the fact that there is a serious lack of talent among the younger actors/actresses. The older ones are known for certain roles and people crave seeing them reprise them.

Hollywood has been doing this shit since Jaws (and, well, Star Wars, although Star Wars was more an unexpected success while Jaws is widely regarded as the first "blockbuster" that redefined the market at the time and was the first until Star Wars to hit $100 million at the box office). They are even going to make a movie version of Candyland
