U.S. military can wear uniform in San Diego *** pride parade: Defense Department

By the CNN Wire Staff

The U.S. Department of Defense is giving the go-ahead to all active-duty military personnel to wear their uniform to march in a *** pride parade in San Diego on Saturday, the first time such approval has been given in the United States.

The Defense Department decision followed news that the Navy had given approval to sailors to wear their uniform in the parade, which drew hundreds of active-duty service members last year shortly before the administration repealed "don't ask, don't tell."

"Based on our current knowledge of the event and existing policies, we hereby are granting approval for service members in uniform to participate in this year's parade," Rene C. Bardorf, deputy assistant secretary of defense for community and public outreach, said in a memorandum released Thursday.

The blanket approval for the various branches of the military applies only to the 2012 San Diego Pride Parade, Bardorf said.

Just a year ago, an active-duty service member faced punishment or discharge if he or she admitted being homosexual, but last September the administration scrapped the policy known as "don't ask, don't tell."

The Defense Department approval to allow service members to wear uniforms at the San Diego parade follows reports that members of the military wore uniforms at a *** pride event held at the Pentagon in June.

Under the guidelines released by the Defense Department, service members can wear their uniforms to march in the parade as long as they participate "in a personal capacity" and follow set standards of "appearance and wear of the military uniform."

While members of the military do not need approval to participate in civic events, they generally need approval to wear their uniforms.

More than 300 active-duty service members have signed up to participate in the parade, Dwayne Crenshaw, executive director of San Diego Lesbian, ***, Bisexual and Transgender Pride, said Thursday.

Last year, roughly 200 active-duty and retired military service members marched in the San Diego parade, donning T-shirts to indicate their branch of military service. The 2011 parade took place one day after a federal appeals court temporarily reinstated the "don't ask, don't tell" policy. The policy was formally revoked months later.

– CNN's Adam Levine and Scott Thompson contributed to this report.

I was curious on how others felt about this. I do not approve just because we aren't allowed to do this in any other social forum. I do not mind service members being in the parade, I just don't agree with them being in uniform. I think this may be some political posturing.

Do you mean military personnel aren't allowed to wear their uniforms in any other kind of parade? Cause I know I have seen the National Guard in their camo uniforms and they even have their jeeps in our rinky dink parade.

If the Department that they come from (Air Force, Army, Navy...) gives them permission they can wear a uniform and act as a representative of that organization. If random soldier X decides that he wants to 'walk in a parade' he should not be in an official uniform. Same goes with veterans. You can wear your 'camouflage or dress uniform' but it cannot have a US ARMY name plate on it or a unit patch, for example.

I think the DOD should really embrace this. Have official service honor guards march in as many of these parades as possible. I'd like national news releases of LGBT soldiers that have excelled in the military. I'd like national news releases on LGBT combat veterans and heroes. THe more they honor LGBT servicemen and women the better, IMO.

I think the military should have no role in any of these proceedings.

I would like to see the Mayor of Houston, TX request this type of thing for their pride parade.

The only way bigotry against the LGBT community is going to be removed from society is for more people to realize that it is a reality and it isn't going anywhere, nor should it have to.

The DOD should stay neutral in all of this. The uniform is NOT to be paraded out in events like this, that is fact. Unless you authorize people to wear them in political rallies, and so on, the DOD should not authorize this.

They want to wear t shirts and all that, go on ahead. Leave the uniform out of it.

Hold on now. Like Bri said, there are Official Military Honor Guards in all kinds of parades every year. They are at most if not all major sporting events in America. How is this somehow different? Why is it okay to parade the troops out at a football game (where there are *** athletes and fans, mind you) but somehow not okay to parade them out at an event meant to celebrate the LGBT community (especially now that LGBTs can serve openly in the military)?

Because you don't like it?

I want to see Anderson Cooper or Rachel Maddow do an hour special on the combat exploits of LGBT servicemen/women. I mean that's really what serving in the military is aboot when it comes down to it. I want to see the exotic places they travelled to, the interesting people they met, the enenmies they killed, the drone strikes they targeted ect.... I want to see the interview with the LGBT servicemenber that helped a terroist take his dirt nap. I want to see an interview with a LGBT servicemenber serving at Guantanomo Bay guarding/interrogating Al Quaeda terrorists. And I want to see it on CNN or MSNBC, hopefully interviewed by a LGBT talking head. They want equality and they should get it.

***/straight it should not matter when you are serving, you should get the same respect universally. You should not get extra attention just because you are in the LGBT community. You are serving and doing what you signed up for. Your gender, race, religious beliefs ..etc should not get you any special treatment.

Are you suggesting that there are no *** Navy SEALS? (for one small instance)

If you think there are no GBTs serving in the infantry, you are sorely mistaken. I left Ls out because there are no women in the infantry.

Like you I do not mind, but it has to be an all or nothing type of thing for me. I do think this is political posturing at this point.

Women are only not in ground infantry, but they're in air infantry units that are not air assault or cav.

In any case, I know of two guys during my infantry time that had the courage at the beginning of the 90's to let a few of their trusted foxhole buddies know their preference. I know of many others during my aviation time.

I got to Ft. Campbell right after a guy was killed for being *** by three of his platoon mates. That was in late 99 I believe.

There are also enlisted women in S2 and S1 shops in line infantry units and now officers in some other shops, like S3.

EDIT: My info on the *** soldier being killed at Ft Campbell was a little rusty. In August 1999 Barry Winchell was killed by one person. Once I was there (middle of 2000), another soldier was beaten and his truck was destroyed in a hate crime by three platoon mates.

Just trying to understand this. So if it would be like the crew of say the Nimitz participating, they would be approved because they were actually representing a military entity, but a single sailor/soldier is not approved because they are just representing themselves and their singular beliefs? It is not a criticism, just a question. So do people that participate at the Blackhawk games during the anthem have to have prior approval to do so? This all seems a little unclear.
