Is this the rule that was used to disallow last night's goal?

67.6 Disallowed Goal - A goal cannot be scored by an attacking player who bats or directs the puck with his hand into the net. A goal cannot be scored by an attacking player who bats or directs the puck and it is deflected into the net off any player, goalkeeper or official. When the puck enters the net on a clear deflection off a glove, the goal shall be allowed.

Or am I missing something in a different section of the rule book??.

The rule is something about deliberately hitting the puck into the goal with anything other than your stick. At least that is how my noob mind remembers it

You just can't redirect the puck with an effort toward the net. If it bounces off you, it's not good.

I think they should adjust the wording because there were plenty of guys retweeting tweets last night of players not even knowing that technically using your head to knock in the puck like that was illegal. They always talk on about hands and distinct kicking motions being illegal but it's really any motion toward the net in a deflection without the stick that is not qualified to be a goal.

But luckily this diddy was still a goal

I made that GIF my sig.

But going back to the rule. As the rule currently reads, any player who INTENTIONALLY and KNOWINGLY angles his skate blade to deflect a puck into the net (we are not even talking about a kicking motion), is violating that rule because the rule includes the word "directed"

I don't see anything wrong with using your head to score a goal. The rule needs to be re-written.

I don't even care it was disallowed. Best hockey goal gif ever.

I was hoping this thread was going to be about super smart ways of scamming free wings/fries at BWW. Still a good thread though. Carry on.

Still a play that Shaw should keep in his skill bag. Had that puck not gone directly into the net and if it hit a stick or bounced off someone else and gone into the net it would have been a legal goal.

Smart play

I can't think of another time where I've seen that happen.

Rule 38.4 is quite clear. Not sure what the fuss is about.

It would have to go off another Hawks skate/stick or so for it to be good still. Like the Kruger slidekick from earlier in this season I linked above. The review process of it was so long because they had to make sure it indeed was knocked in by Ben Smith and not just the defenders stick.

It's actually not, The term "deflection" is very loose. In what regard is angling your skate to bounce the puck off your body not "deflecting?" the puck. It ought to be reworded to something like intentional deflecting or deflecting with motion toward the net.

It's also clear that plenty of players don't quite understand the rule and don't know it's implications, so it could be easily reworked to be better written and understood. Rules shouldn't just be understood by the Refs but made to be grasped by all players too.

Even though the goal didn't count at least he still gave Beauchemin a good kick to the nuts.
