Utmost respect to all of you. It really takes a special person to be able to serve.

My grandfather was in Schofield Barracks when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. He survived and lived to 89 years old. He's interred in Arlington Natl. with the highest possible honors. A little late to talk about now, but spent my time yesterday just reminiscing him and everything he taught me. A "cheers" and big salute to all who served and sacrificed.

p.s- It's why I've always loved the Gremans/pearl harbor joke from CBMB. Always a good chuckle to me. And I bet my grandpa would have laughed, too.

Would love to know more about what your grandpa passed on to you. A girl I'm seeing, her grandfather was in Normandy, the bulge and made it out with many medals. I was honored when she took me to a cemetary dedicated to the big red one.

But on a serious note, he never talked about it to anyone other than my grandmother, (which I'm very lucky to still have around at 89 years old. I fucked up....i suck at numbers..`97 was went he passed away, so he was 79 when he left)

He would talk to you about anything else, like being sent to Normandy 2 weeks after D-day, he was briefly involved with the Korean War but was Honorably Discharged shortly after due to health issues. He was a big basketball fan and even played for the Army teams when not ordered to be elsewhere. Went on to be a postmaster in a quiet little Illinois town for 30 years until retiring and living out life watching sports. Urblock knows what town it was lol.

^ to add to that, my grandmother only recently started telling my family what he had told her. She says he spent his 1st week at home sleeping on the floor close to the bed so he could roll under it. She also said the he always told her (and I'm quoting her) "There's a sickening feeling when a bomb drops from a plane; you hear it and you know it's heading for where you stand" Chilling.

****. I didn't know about the barrack position your grandpap spoke of, was he involved in Pearl Harbor? Ugh. Shit keeps me up at nights. With the old breed was best horror novel I ever read [emoji52].

She told me her grandpa on normany was first line. I haven't asked too much but her grandfather was in the big red one and she said he remembers getting off the boat and being really awakened by falling in the water and realizing the water was nothing but red.. Obviously blood. It chilled
Me to the bone. He passed away and I said nothing would've been more of an honor than to shake his hand.

My buddy Joe, that used to come to my old work, sweetest man you'd meet. He'd bring coffee, and his wife would have him bring cake to us at the gym. I give him the Knucks lol, he was my guy. Found out he was first line marine machine gunner in Iwo Jima.

I never dared to ask him about it other than to walk up and say thanks sir n shake his hand. Love that guy and his mini van he's still rockin lol!

Same story about my pops. Left West Chicago in '79 for Las Vegas. He served exclusively in the Korean War. Postman and all.

I'm glad you guys made it out of the meat grinder. Hopefully you're happy and healthy, or at least getting the care you need

ND is horrible.
No matter your politics and/or feelings about recent, and not so recent, wars waged by the US, you need to give it up for working men and women who sacrifice so much for this country.

God bless the veterans, and I hope each one finds happiness and peace after they serve.

Here is a link, if you want an easy way to give to reputable organizations that support our fighting people when they come home:

I know the economy is hard- especially for younger people- and that sometimes we don't have a ton to give, but every little bit helps.

Close, '94 during Operation Brightstar, which was one of the largest multi-national war games at the time. You can consider it a Pyramid assault as we flew around those damn things for 6-8 hours a day for 4 days straight. It was VIP flights for state dignitaries, military peeps, some celebs in the region or happen to be in the region etc. My pilot on most of those flights was Congress Woman Tammy Duckworth when she was a wee lil butter bar. :)
