Hard to be happy with the move of players like Versteeg, Buff, Etc. Though it's a FA capped league and it nearly had to happen.

Time to start to embrace what the return on the latest deal has to offer. The biggest piece to impact the 2010 roster being Stalberg. Bowman must feel confident they have a Buff replacement in this big Swede.

A big player with great speed. Accelerates really well and reaches full speed very fast. Forechecks successfully and plays with good intensity. A natural sniper with a fine scoring touch. Defense and passing game could use some improvement. Should play even more physical with his large frame.

A lot of that sounds what you'd describe Buff as especially in his time at forward, the differences is Stalberg may be less physical but a bigger point producer... Despite his size if he does have any net presence is unknown which may be a big PP loss still.

I've heard of his amazing speed on the ice as well. Here's a brief scouting report on him from forecaster.ca:

ASSETS: Is an incredibly fast skater that can blow by defenders. Also owns a projectable frame and scoring upside.

FLAWS: Needs to utilize his 6-3 frame more to his advantage, as well as improve his defensive-zone coverage.

CAREER POTENTIAL: Speedy, big offensive winger.

I traded for him in NHL 10, and he was awesome in my first game with him, so he's gotta be incredible, right?

Yea I've seen him in some practice games and he was beasting out. He does need to use more body though.

Many of you guys would not have heard of this guy - Ken Yaremchuk. There was this guy who had a similar skill set as this particular guy Stalberg.

Ken Yaremchuk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There was another guy - Tom McMurchy
Tom McMurchy hockey statistics & profile at hockeydb.com

Again another guy with some serious wheels - but I guess the point is that while year after year both of these guys would be talked up as, somehow, the answer to the Edmonton Oilers of the 80's neither one of them had an NHL career worth spit...

I understand why the team got this guy -but like anyone that hasn't made and shown it in the NHL (and I really hate myself for this) -Joe isn't wrong when he goes off about getting guys that aren't proven.

On the other hand - there wasn't a lot of choice otherwise -so maybe this (and some of these other guys might pan out) -but if they don't then it won't be the first time. . .

Anyways - I wonder about the guy's ability to control the puck - I remember going to a game a million years ago now where this Yaremchuk guy busted down the ice and circled the net a couple of times- was clearly the fastest guy out there - but he couldn't do anything with he puck -he couldn't even get in position to get off a shot- nevermind that no one could catch the guy or even pokecheck to puck away from him...

Stalberg can fly but is also lazy at times.

Well, you're right that there is something to be said for skates being too fast for hands...but again, like you said, there was no cost room for proven guys. He will complete for a slot, I think, despite being on the unofficial depth chart on the third line.

There he has a huge boom or bust factor and there's no denying it. Yet his game has ability to develop. It's a mystery factor if he can better his hands but there was a lot of help going into Buff to help him pull it off.

Though the concept of people being able to pull out success in the NHL with tons of speed and less natural skill has changed. It's still there but with the modern NHL it isn't as difficult for them to fill in still as times of the 80s & 90s

nice idea for a thread. No one ever thinks that just because the casual hockey fan doesn't know who he is, that he will not be good.

Stalberg was a great piece of that trade. All in all I like the deal they got from Toronto in that one.

Im thinking we will see this kid on the 3rd/4th line just because he is cheap and we will have to fill out our roster.

Yeah, he probably has a pretty good inside track since he will have like what, a half of a season of experience in the NHL, but he'll still have to compete a bit.

Watching Steeger's interview tonight on CSN, Stalberg better step his fucking game up.

If he can't then we got severely raped in the deal.

Not true because the future of the other two prospects effect it. Everything doesn't have to be as immediate as your demanding for everything.

I noticed the Blackhawks are hyping the non traded players a bunch. A story about Troy on the page, their facebook page for some reason put out a bunch of pictures of Kopecky's playoff performance and in their story about the their prospects was mentioning Stalberg as a big thing.

There is a lot of reason to hope for him, note his lacking D skills but he is being brought to a defensive pushing team with Q going to demand it out of everyone. Plus they may believe his offensive skills can make him get into the 2nd line. They say on their site they're predicting 2nd/3rd line spot for him so if he can get on the line with Hossa and Sharp, that could rub off on him greatly. The likes of Kane and Versteeg jumped up defensively last year it could happen to anyone with that drive.

The coaching staff must see something in him that they can work with to make him better.
If they can then I'm all for it !

there is potential with him but like a few before me have said he has not proven anything and has to earn his way on this team. I like most ppl are sad that we had to trade away the guys we did but what was done had to be done. Our first two lines are great just have to see what we do to fill in the 3rd and fourth, and i think this guy is a perfect fit for the third line.

If it was me, I'd say 3rd -as I think this year they will have to go with a more conventional checking/grinding 4th line -and I can't see this kid as a boards type of player.

I agree....But maybe his spot will be taken by a more defensively minded player on the 3rd line since our 3rd line usually goes against other teams 1st line
