you can VERY easily find a back-up PG for vets' min or close to that
anthony johnson did a good job for the magic
Sergio Rodriguez might be available from the blazers
Juan Dixon is a UFA
Jacque Vaughn is a UFA
Bobby Jackson is a UFA
Chris Quinn has a player option for 1 mil, but i think he can get more than that so he won't exercise it
Luther Head is a UFA
Travis Diener has an option for 1.7 mil, but him too might get more than that
flip murray is a UFA - not quite a PG though
I know most of these players are old and/or quite bad. They sure are not the superstars Hinrich is, but there's absolutely no point in paying 9 mil/season for a back-up PG. Not when you have a star (maybe superstar) PG that you expect to play 40 min/game.
You can get one of these guys for 2-3 mil/season easily.
And if Rose gets injured and misses a big part of the season, so what ?
You're not aiming for the title just yet, so if you end up in the lottery with a chance to draft some more talent at a reduced salary, EVEN BETTER.
IMO you're not thinking long term, but short term. Say keeping Hinrich means 5 more wins per season but those 5 more wins per season in the next season or two mean nothing. You're not gonna get a title in 2010 or even 2011. So Hinrich won't be that important. It's better to unload him so you have more flexibility so you can maybe make a move in 2010 (trade deadline or in the summer).
PS: you could also try using Gordon at PG in case of emergency. For 8 min a game he might be able to handle it.
Plan B: Move Hinrich. Resign Ben Gordon. The problem with this fit is the lack of a backup PG for when Rose goes to the bench or misses any significant playing time.
