I knew the Cubs were going for some outfield help, so they chose an old familiar face and a lefty.

Good Luck to Arismendy Alcantara in the A's organization. I hope it works out well for both parties.

Now why we are talking to Beane, how bout a trade for Sean Doolittle to shore up the left side of the bullpen? :)

Cogs is back

@CSNChicago: Cubs re-acquire Chris Coghlan from Oakland for Arismendy Alcantara - cmcst.sn/Ik16

For Alcantara, who i just told someone they probably dont like anymore..

Glad to see cogs back, he also makes the bench better when Soler returns..

I heard also that LaStella may be headed to DL, so it possible Almora sticks around if that the case.

Yep. La Stella officially on 15 Day DL with a hamstring strain. Coghlan is a solid LH bat that can fill that void. Might create some roster drama going forward but this is a great move.

edit: I just looked at Coghlan's numbers. Yikes.

Cogs was "my guy" last year. Decent bat, plays multiple positions...he's a good fit. Glad he's back.

Yea, kinda looks as though this move was made more because of LaStella getting hurt then for filling in for Soler.
Cogs can cover both areas for them

As far as roster drama, they probably send down fedorwicz in the end.. didn't cogs catch once or twice, i think he that emergency 3rd catcher type too.

I know he started out hot...
Hopefully getting back here and with his old buddies gets him rejuvenated..

Like i said, he sure would make the bench better in long run and especially in playoff

I like Cogs.

But sad to see that Mendy has been put in a corner.

I just don't want to see Cogs taking time away from Baez. With all the multiple position players, that's quite possible.

Who knows. We will see how the playing time shakes up but Cogs can play 3B and 2B.

Personally I'm torn on giving more playing time to Almora or Baez. Either can change a game with their D

This was interesting..

Kaplan said that his source told him the Cubs had offered a package with either Soler or Baez to Indians for one of their top pitcher and were told no they wanted Russell or Bryant..

If so, guess we cant count out the Cubs still looking to add a young controlled starter at some point using either Soler or Baez as trade bait

I think Cogs for now will rotate mostly between 3b and LF while LaStella and Soler is out ..

I think that is part of why this deal was done....Almora gets more game time but back in Iowa. The kid needs to play not grapple for playing time in the bigs.

I'm rather sad. Alcantara was one of my favorite young players. Granted some of the shine is off him now but he still has the potential to be an all star caliber player. In that regard, they gave up a lot for not even a full year of Cogs. And not only that but he's been terrible this year hitting .146/.215/.272. Maybe this is a Hammel case where he's just better with the cubs but seems like an awful lot of potential to give up for a bench player.

I would think Almora will stay up for awhile with Coghlan getting some time at both LF and 3B but who knows? La Stella is more of a loss than I think some might think.

Alcantara was out of options and they were going to lose him in off season anyways...
Like I said, i dont think management was high on Alcantara anymore .

Might as well trade him for a familiar face that fits a need for this team now and maybe later and hope he can regain what he lost this year..

I wouldn't be sad. He's going to a new organization and that may be refreshing for him.

I mean I get it. It's just bittersweet to see that sort of potential go for what amounts to a rental. If I thought Cogs could get a QO it would hurt less because with Fowler and another QO pick the cubs could be rather strong in the draft despite a likely late pick but I don't think Cogs is worth $15 mil+/season

Also I'm sort of curious if the A's are chipping in some money. That was the reasoning they traded Cogs in the first place. Granted we're like 1/3 through the season so he's that much cheaper but I don't know just strikes me as another consideration.

Isn't it also true that you can't give a QO to a pending FA who was traded during the season? I believe that is the case.
