We've already established that a hot dog is a sandwich, so now....

I would say no. I think you need a stock for soup.

I do not think chili is a soup. My reasoning is all in the preparation of the meat. You do not boil ground beef, turkey, sausage, etc in water. You typically brown it before hand and add it in.

soup
so͞op/
noun
1.
a liquid dish, typically made by boiling meat, fish, or vegetables, etc., in stock or water.

Chili is not soup, but if you made me chili and told me you were serving soup but handed me a bowl of delicious chili I am not going to be upset.

However if you pour chicken noodle soup over my hot dog all like "Soup... chili... same thing, amirite?", I am going to punch you in the fucking throat.

As cornbread is both Corn and Bread, I think that Chili could fit into multiple categories.

From the wiki page: "Chili con carne, commonly known in American English as simply "chili", is a spicy stew containing chili peppers, meat, and often tomatoes and beans."

And before you ask: "stews have less liquid than soups, are much thicker and require longer cooking over low heat. While soups are almost always served in a bowl, stews may be thick enough to be served on a plate with the gravy as a sauce over the solid ingredients.[1]"

But what if it self identifies as a soup. Who are you to judge what subcategory of liquid food it wants to be?

I've been considering making a chili and then cheddar biscuits and doing a play on biscuits and gravy...
