We name our backyard hens, therefore they are pets and are given a proper Christian burial when they pass. Not gonna kill something that feeds me those delicious eggs every day, bad karma.
My wife also takes in rescue chickens (along with cats & dogs) on a different property out in the country, she is very weary of y'all butchering types that come by to "adopt" them.

No when they quit laying eggs they get put down, im not going to pay for their feed if they dont produce. I give a lot of eggs and chickens away to help feed people. I need chickens that produce. I have names for them to , but its usually at the dinner table.
