Well, the individual websites should tell you how well the journalism majors are rated. Also check for independent scholarly sites that will tell you which schools you should try.
Probably a good idea to look into scholarships and other financial aid. Not sure how much it costs relative to the private schools but I'd try UIC just because it's a state school and you should be subsidized as an Illinois citizen.

Columbia is a good school for journalism. Northwestern is the best though. Countless sports journalists & just regular journalists are grads of N'Western.
