I am backing off on cylindrical after some thought.

Spherical is the answer.
Secondary answer in our liveable environment is circle.

Hear me out.
Soup is liquid, no matter how viscous.

To determine the natural shape, external forces must be eliminated.

To eliminate almost every external force, save gravity, and pour soup on a perfectly level surface, it will expand in a circle.
Soups natural state on earth is circular.

However- gravity is an external force. If we wish to discover soups preferred natural state, we are forced to eliminate gravity.

When liquid is set free to float in space, its own even gravitational pull settles it in to a sphere.

Soup without external force is absolutely, inarguably spherical.
Soups natural state on earth with no force other than gravity when poured from a fixed location is circular.

Well shit.
The space example is flawed.

I did not account for a vacuum of pure space.

Soup is spherical in a spacecraft. Soup in the environment with the least amount of external force before ceasing to exist will float in a sphere.

However, a liquid in the vacuum of space will flash boil... so soup in pure space becomes gas.

The question becomes, at what point does it cease to be soup?

I think you guys are taking this to literal. I think I have an irrational belief that soup is a circle and I have no idea why.
It's an OCD thing. Weird shit makes me uncomfortable, and weird shit relaxes me.

Uncomfortable: gas being pumped to anything other than an even number. The carts in the corral at the store mixed by size instead of separated.

Soothing: pen and marker sets of multiple colors. I buy them even though I don't need them. I have to conciously make myself stay away from that aisle at Staples or I'll buy another set I don't need.

Well....It might take a space man to tell you

in a vacuum...in space...soup is a sphere. In a bowl on earth it is a half sphere. In a pot, it is a cylinder. Only puree or broth is inherently flat.

Bruce Lee said "be like water my friend", and take the shape you need to. Soup does a better job of that than most of us.

Growing up I had this friend whose mom was over the top with OCD. But only for food. If she was having a meal, everything on the plate had to be the same shape. Like cheese and crackers - if the cracker was a square, the cheese had to be a square. Or if she was eating a burger, the patty had to be a circular shape to match the bun. Wonder how thats going nowadays lol

So I've had a few beers and I'm convinced, soup is a circle.
