You have to check this video out. This guy is referred to as "The Iceman". He has used meditation and deep breathing technique to endure the extreme cold and become more acclimated to it. Exposing yourself to it more makes it easier to do so in the future. Watch some of the stuff he's done and it's amazing. Holds the world record for being submerged in ice for the longest amount of time without his body temperature changing. It doesn't even end there with this guy. He can influence his immune system and raise his adrenaline level at will and has proven it.

I have my Hot or Not consulting services for that. Tater has signed his wife up to be my first client. Speaking of which Tater......
It works fine with your heart. If there are any concerns, just acclimate a little cooler every day until you're at straight cold. #1, cold running water is rarely ever THAT cold, and if it is, just add some hot water to bring it near 55 degrees in the winter(think swimming in the spring in the morning). #2, hot water damages(hence ages) your skin. Not only that, you can save a lot of water this way.
I don't do cold every time, but most of the time. There are benefits to hot showers too. Clearing excessive stuck earwax(all you all-day earbud users aren't going deaf, you're just getting plugged), opening up pores to dissolve excess electrolytes(salts), vapor therapy (shower with mint/camphor or a number of other oils, some found in everyday soap, it will open your throat and lungs a bit). I do two weeks cold, one day hot. Hot every day is just a bad idea, one done out of luxury. Same with showering every single day, shampoo every day, all of which puts more stress on your skin and a number of other organs than you would think.
