Vu's Unique Twist: Top Five Superhero Movies NOT Based on Existing Comic Books.

The Specials (2000) - Really tough choice between this and a release the year prior called 'Mystery Men', but I am giving this one the nod. A ton of fun and the first time I realized that Rob Lowe was freaking hilarious when he wanted to be.

Super (2010) - Same director as 'The Specials' only a whole lot darker story. With all due respect to the wonderful 'Deadpool' movies...this is probably the most depraved Super Hero movie I have ever seen. Rainn Wilson is brilliant.

Unbreakable (2000) - With all due respect to 'The Sixth Sense'...this was the infamous director's best film. The most unique approach to a Super Hero movie ever pulled off successfully on every level.

Megamind (2010) - A fantastically hilarious family-friendly take on the Super Villain. Nevermind that it is animated...it is awesome.

The Incredibles (2004) - A fantastically hilarious family-friendly take on the Super Hero. Nevermind that it is animated...it is awesome.

I have been a DCU guy my whole life, but as for movies Deadpool takes the top spot for its adult orientation.
I didnt care for deadpool at all until I saw the movie, and I absolutely loved Ryan reynolds in the role.

Guardians of the galaxy is up there as well... another group I laughed at when I heard the film was being made.... a tree and a talking raccoon?!?!? But the movie blew me away. Everything worked.

Now- for the controversial pick.
Dawn of justice, Batman v. Superman.
The Batman fight scenes in that movie were the first of any batman movie to portray an accurate fighting style for Bats. Quick witted, shifty, takes advantage of surroundings, brutal, and smart.
Bales Batman fought like tyson- Affleck fought like Ali.
IMO, batman should be mind first, body second because he will not always be the biggest and strongest.

As for the critical beating the movie took, For whatever reason, DC is held to a higher standard than marvel by critics. Superman "dies" running doomsday through with the spear and everyone has a shit fit.
On the flip side, Cap tells Vision "we don't trade lives" When vision asks for his cyborg ass to get destroyed to stop Thanos. Then, they proceed to cause the deth of hundreds upon hundreds of Waukondan warriors while they dick around trying to extract the stone. Idiocy in marvel movies is blown off. In DC movies, the world comes crashing down. Maybe it is because Superman/batman are such cultural giants- everyone knows them intimately, and everyone thinks the version they love is all there should be.

Avengers- Awesome movie. LOVED Thor in the movie. Hated his individual movies until 3, but he was a great character in Avengers. Hated the individual Iron man movies, Stark was awesome in Avengers. Didnt care for the first Captain America movie, Cap whooped ass in avengers.
Great movie top to bottom.

Age of Ultron and Infinity war round out the list. Cant decide between them. Great culmination of the universe so far.

...Honorable mention- Spiderman homecoming. Never liked spiderman, hated the movies. Tom Holland is absolutely outstanding in the role. Plays it to perfection. Cant wait for the new one.

Seriously.

The idea is that the Super Villian finally defeats his archrival Super Hero and realizes....WTF do I do now?!?!?

Will Ferrrel kills it. Cannot recommend it enough.

Incredibles 2 was better.

When you wrote that I was like...oh yeah...that was so good and so original. I didn't need him to be a good guy at the end, but who cares, Will was great and I am not really much of a Will type supporter either.

Just a solid original story.

Honestly, critics did not give Bat Vs Sup poor reviews because they had a shitfit over Superman trading his life to kill Doomsday. They gave it a rating based on how relatively good the overall film was. I don't think critics hold DC to a higher standard, rather I think they'd prefer DC offer the type of 'turns' Marvel does.

I enjoyed Bat Vs Sup, but wouldn't be top 5 for me. Was the 3hr version better than the theatrical release, which seemed a bit disjointed to me?

The trailer to BVS made it look like Superman was an amoral super godlike space-alien (which was Batman's dream with Sup flanked by Sup soldiers), but that trailer was a bait-n-switch to me. I would have liked to see DC do that alternate reality were Bat saves us from this weird godlike alien. But DC didn't do that, and they'd probably be unwilling to change Superman into a semi-villain even for one stand alone film. Lost opportunity. Instead it was a launching film for a Justice League film series. Which is fine. But hey, there's been a ton of Superman and Batman films already; seems like DC is the one unwilling to take any risks at alternate realities, like an amoral god 'Superman'.

The 'not trading lives' is an interesting thing to talk about, but it wasn't a plot hole, it was a debate they had, but they traded the life anyway. In Infinity Wars, Vision and everyone else was willing to let Vision die to destroy the Stone to save lives in the Universe... they were just also willing to holdoff (voluntarily) the enemy long enough to try to remove the Stone, keep Vision alive, then destroy the Stone. In fact, despite the hiccup in the plan, Scarlet Witch did destroy the Stone and Vision, it just didn't make any difference because Thanos could reverse time, so the self sacrifice was all in order here.

I thought Ultron was a step down, but still entertaining, and Infinity was better. In comparison, what did you think of Xmen, Xmen Future Past, Superman (1978) and Spiderman 2 (Doc Oct)?
