When do you think the Sox will realistically compete? Not win the division, but compete.

I know, we are in our first off season with a rebuild, but, kind of just sticking my foot in the water here.

when I know 100% that they are rebuilding than I can give a better number but right now competing in 2 years and than playoff type competing in 5.

I doubt they're going to go on a spending spree.

2014 is going to be a transition year.

Evaluate:
-how Rienzo, Santiago, Johnson, and Danks perform in the rotation.
-How Webb, Petricka, Leesman, Reed, and Jones, progress/regress.
-If Gillespie, L. Garcia, Semien, (I think he should start in Charlotte, IMO), and Jordan deserve playing time as starters.
-If Abreu, and Avisail, are legit.

Probably last call on Viciedo, if he has another .300 OBP, and sub 20 bombs don't expect him around.

I'd like to re-get Crain, but I'm fine with letting the kids pitch in the pen and let them get their growing pains out of the way in a punted season.

Reed, Jones, Petricka, Webb, Leesman, Lindstrom, and some free agent is good enough for me. Maybe Oliver Perez to be the loogy? They could flip him at the deadline, Lindstrom too, if they put up good numbers.

I am going to take the Kool AId approach and say we compete in 2014. I base this off of a few things.

1) The team has great starting pitching
2) The team basically had all tanked defensively at the same time
3) The hitting basically had all tanked at the same time

If we just get to average in 2014 with the D and the Off, I think we compete.

JP Howell
Oliver Perez
Joe Smith

The Sox are easily the worse team in the division, and there are still more than a few players on the roster that need to be gone. Which means, we have to find replacements that are going to stick and contribute. Given all this, it's going to be atleast two more years of the Sox finding talent to fill out the roster and another year or two before they start kicking ass with regularity.

Not sure how you can the Sox are easily the worse team in the division.

Twins have zero starting pitching.

I still think this is a transaction year. Last call for Beckham, and Viciedo.

1. We still have a number of underperforming players on the roster (Beckham, Alexei, Viciedo, Danks, whoever the catcher is).

2. We have some young players with potential, but it remains to be seen if they're any good.

So unless we add exceptional talent like Tanaka, every indication is that 2014 will be a sub .500 transitional year.
