I used to do installs for Abt Electronics. My cousin and I were on our way to work, and Mancow was talking about doing a phone scam. Then after a few minutes he started going on about a plane crashing into a building, then he said another plane crashed into the building, he went on to say it was the WTC. I thought it was all a gag. When we got to work, co workers asked me if I heard about the WTC. I told them that they listened to too much Mancow. They took us to the showroom floor, and every TV was tuned in. It was nuts.

The following year, on 9/11, a Driver for Abt got shitcanned because he brought a mac 10 to work and got caught with it at the metal detector. He said he was afraid of another terrorist attack happening that day. Dipshit.

I was sitting in my Colonel's office, about a block and a half away from 1st Air Force HQ, and two blocks from SEADS.

About as near to the gear, and as far away from events, as anyone on the eastern seaboard could be as it turned out.

Speaking of where were you? How about that moon landing...talk about glued to the TV.

I was on the other side of the world, stationed in South Korea. Obviously, it was night time (14 hours ahead) over there. I was on my way to bed, when I just happened to turn to CNN (with a fuzzy reception) to see one of the Twin Towers already smoking. I heard the reporters saying that they thought a small plane accidentally flew into the building. Several minutes later, I watched as a second plane violently flew into the other tower, and then I instantly knew it was no accident. That was probably the most surreal moment of my entire life.

After that, I tried calling back home to family & friends, but I couldn't get through, due to the congested phone lines. Eventually, I was able to contact people later on. So, about an hour or so after the 2nd plane hit, our battalion commander called everybody down to formation and basically explained everything that was going on. Needless to say, we were on the highest alert for the next couple of weeks.

Woke up, turned on the TV and saw that 1 of the WTC had been hit. I was 10 yrs old, so like the OP, I had no idea what was really happening. I went to go ask my mom what was going on (she had no idea anything had happened prior to me asking since she was on the phone w/ a friend organizing the day's carpool). She told her friend as well & she just kind of went blank & walked to the TV. I had no idea that my uncle was on a flight to NYC that morning, so I'm guessing the 1st thing she had thought was that her brother was on the plane (he wasn't fwiw).

She went to go pick up my friend & dropped us off at school before the 2nd plane had hit. It was a very quiet day and we weren't allowed to talk about the events at school mainly due to living in American Airlines country, where many, many of the Dads in the area where American Airline pilots. Eventually school was released early (right after lunch) & I remember just going home and watching the TV with my mom for the rest of the day/night. We were glued to it. My dad was in Bentonville, AR for meetings w/ Walmart, so he had to drive back to Dallas the next day since all flights had been cancelled. Throughout the day, we would hear the occasional fighter jet fly over. It was so surreal.

I remember watching the TV just thinking "I wish I was there right now". I just wanted to be part of something so historic & help people out..

That's a pretty cool outlook for a 10 year old kid to have; wanting to help people. Empathy is a beautiful thing. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you do (or plan to do) something for a living that helps others.

Well I plan on getting into sports (and am in the sports world to an extent already), but plan on using that power that comes with being in a sports organization to help others, help em live a dream of some sort.

Can you play left tackle?

Seriously though; if you're thinking about helping others, while doing what you do in sports, then you're already winning. Just imagine how pathetic those guys with the boxcutters were...

 I wish.
Not to get too off-topic & sappy, but it's mainly because of my uncle who has cerebral-palsy. Almost every athlete or team I've worked for I've gotten him autographs. I couldn't care less about that stuff myself, but he's a huge sports fanatic so every time I send him something, my aunt (who lives near his 'house') sends a picture of him with the signed memorabilia w/ a huge smile on his face. If I can replicate that to countless others, I've done my job successfully.

Sounds like a good plan to share the love...and, "winning the hearts & minds thru sports."

(September 6, 1972 would be the antithesis of that)

I was in pre school and all I could remember is maybe a tv that was set up showing one of the towers up in smoke. all the old coverage and footage makes it alot easier to understand what it would've felt like if I would have been old enough to understand. The videos on youtube of people jumping from the towers are the worst.
