I've been wanting to check out Austin. Plus, I have nothing against Texas women.</p>

Austin is nice, but one of the most expensive places in Texas to live in regards to buying a home and property taxes.   I'd love to move there when I retire in 10-15 years.</p>

Yeah, that is shadey at best. The stories I have come across state you live there for a few months, then the company boots you. People living in their cars, "man-camps", and other stories make me weary.</p>

Rough necks have a reputation for working hard and living hard.   Lots of stuff like that here in South Texas as well.</p>

Summers are unbearably hot down in the Lonestar state ? Yes?  </p>

No state income tax.</p>

And as R. Lee Ermy once said in the movie Platoon "only 2 things come from Texas, steers and qxxxrs which one are you"</p>

The one thing that would drive me crazy is all of the Dallas Cowboy, Jerry Jones stuff you would be hard pressed to not see.</p>

I have a friend who's been around much of the US.  She doesn't have anything but good to say about Texas--specifically the Corpus Christi area, but she does say I'd melt in the summers.  She does also miss the PacNW weather just a bit.</p>

 </p>

The no state income tax is one thing that, if I moved away from here would be a necessity.  In Washington, there's no state income tax but there is a sales tax.  In Oregon, there's no sales tax but there is an income tax.  Either/Or is workable.  In a state like Illinois, you almost was to get a grassroots campain to slash the states budget by forcing the Blagoviches to work for tips.</p>

 </p>

The one time I was laid over in Houston, it was decent--except for the blistering summer heat.  But at least it was dry heat--had it been humid I would have been miserable.  But really, keep me north of the 45N parallel and I'm happy.</p>

I remember being in San Antonio in 2010... It was extremely hot there.... somewhat humid, too. Pretty city at least.

Los Angeles doesn't get that humidity and out of control summers, but there's a load of taxes there (Sales tax is below Chicago for worst in the nation if I recall) and lots of delusional people. At least there's loads of suburbs there to get a decent house on, but the job market is questionable. On the bright side, the hockey is good. ;) </p>

I left Illinois for Louisiana in 2011, bought a house there and like it a lot. Just took a job in the Bakken oil field in ND and Montana. Keeping the house in Louisiana, but will be splitting my time off between Louisiana and Illinois because I miss good pizza...

I've been driving a tanker hauling crude oil in Louisiana for the past 3 years, doing the same up here. This oil field is absolutely massive, and there is a bigger one right below it. The amount of oil here is staggering, they have 1 million barrels of oil a day in wells that are capped off because there is more oil production than they can physically move out of the state to refineries. I heard they are building 2 refineries here in the near future. The Bakken is 200,000 square miles and the shale is 150 feet thick, the Three Forks formation directly beneath it covers more square miles and is almost twice as thick and they've just started punching wells into it. In Louisiana our biggest producing wells were making 200-300 barrels a day, there are dozens of wells here that make that in less than 2 hours. They need pipeline infrastructure to get the this stuff out of here. Almost hit 2 cows today and a pheasant, animals are all over the place here. They are paying double up here over Louisiana, hopefully I can remember how to survive a cold winter again...

Yup housing is at a premium for sure. Most companies are providing housing so it's not terrible but people who work here don't really live here. I work 4 weeks on 1 week off, I can stay longer if I want and get more hometime. 6 days on 1 day off while here. Everything is more expensive here, gas, food, housing you name it. It's the fucking wild west.

I looked into it and it is rough. I can't roughneck. Maybe a few years ago I could but my body is getting older. I can't do most of the jobs available. My cousin had an awesome job up there delivering the pipes for the rigs. It started at 60K a year and after 3 he was well into 6 figures. Drive to a place, put it in park and the roughnecks unload. He would just nap. They get down, he gets loaded back up, and onto the next place. He also had a place in Casper WY., which helped.</p>

I currently have a friend working up there. He is working 15 hour days, 7 days a week. He has started buying houses back here for rental income. He will be getting his pilots licence in a little bit so he can fly back an forth on days off.</p>

Gas has dropped @ $.40 per gallon in the last 12 months.   From $3.29 per gallon last year around X-mas to 2.89 when I filled up last night.</p>
