"I disagree with this law/regulation and think it is stupid, so I am going to intentionally go out and break this law/regulation in protest" Where the **** is the sense in that? Seriously??? And how hard is it to understand when an Officer tells you to shut-up and stop, to just do it? Those two idiots that were just showing their "affection" to each other are no different then a 6 yr old boy putting his finger an inch from his sisters face going "I'm not touching her, I'm not touching her!" after being told by his mother to stop touching his sister. They, like he, deserved whatever punishment they got.

Where as I agree that the law is Special person the way it is written, I also understand the reasons behind it.

And to whomever it was that was bitching about the noise from jets and helicopters right there at the Jefferson Memorial, you're full of crap, you can't hear shit from either one there. Yeah, you can hear the traffic, but the other, no you can't. I worked a block from Reagan, and you can't hear shit there from the jets, and spent many a lunch walking around the Mall.

The only other context really is what led to the law being put in place. There was a flash mob of about 20 or so people a few years ago that spontaneously broke out into dance while listening to iPods. That was what did it. It was decided it was necessary to preserve the atmosphere of "tranquil contemplation" for all visitors, which if you've ever visited the Jefferson Memorial you'd know - between the helicopters flying over every 20 minutes or so, the traffic on I395 just behind it, the air traffic from Reagan, the children running and playing and the tour guides shouting to be heard over everything else - that idea is total bullshit.

You can always argue the "how" of those people going about it, but the point remains the same and remains purposeful: to bring into attention something that shouldn't exist, in this case something that is also just downright dumb. Yeah you're always going to have people who have other agendas that latch onto something like this, but a lot of the people who showed up this past weekend after seeing that video were....just people. Not with any hidden agenda. Not long haired, doped up stoners fighting for world peace and the next bag of Doritos. Young adults, younger people, elderly people, you name it, they were there dancing, just to show how stupid it is to actually have that law.

But what hurts us infinitely more than any asinine dancing law is that demeaning attitude of "While they're just hippies.....". That is what really holds us back. It's this elitist bullshit line of thinking that goes "Oh who cares about them and what happens to them, they're just (fill in the blank) after all, nothing to do with me." That always seems to come back to bite us in the ass every goddamn single time. And we keep doing it. Over and over, making the same mistake.

I did call them stupid hippies, but I also said it was stupid that they got arrested. Just because I dont like them, doesnt mean I dont care that they got arrested for something so infinitely dumb.

Exactly what is a hippie? I think it is very subjective and that everyone has their own definition.

As previously brought up. Rosa Parks, civil rights movement. They openedly disobeyed the law. It is a form of protest. The law is fucking Special person. I understand the point of it but to have a law is plain stupid. It would be like enacting a law that there is no talking in a library.

Didn't Eric Cartman say the stand around and listen to festival music and smoke weed?

You got a point, but I stil dont think these two issues are on the same level at all.

"I have to have a permit to have a demonstration/rally of bigger then 25 people in a park, and some places are off limits to even apply for a permit, and I think that is stupid"

does not compare to

"I have to sit on the back of the bus, drink from seperate water fountains, use a seperate rest room and a shit ton of other indignities because I am black, and I think that is stupid"

Sorry not same level.

Not at all. You specifically mentioned Rosa Parks. She did nothing illegal at all. She was simply defiant to something that was an accepted practise, not willfully break a law. See there are ways to make your point and stay within the limits of the law.

I also like how some of the cops acted like they were taking down thugs in south central.

I think the law is bullshit. But I get the spirit of it. It is supposed to be a quiet and reflective atmosphere at the Jefferson. I lived in DC for over three years and worked a few blocks from there.

But to arrest a couple for slow dancing is dumb. It means those Capital cops and Park cops don't have enough to do or aren't looking for the real things they need to be mindful of like a terrorist leaving a bomb bag there or a creep trying to mug or purse snatch someone.

The flash mob idea (not really a flash mob, I know) was done in defiance of the arrest and the law/rule of not allowing people to dance in some of those National Mall locations. For people to get arrested and beaten up is just fucking dumb. Those cops should be on review for wasting their time with something so trivial, and possibly be on trial for abuse.

Spoken like a true hippie.

Should singing be allowed in the interior of the Lincoln Memorial?

The thing is that law went into effect last January I believe, based on the idea that that area is quiet and reflective when in reality it's anything but quiet, whether or not you want to argue on the specifics of why is irrelevant. That went into effect over a year ago. If there was any kind of outrage through the "proper channels", obviously it didn't make any kind of big splash or much of any spark. People keep saying he did it for the attention, of course he did. That was the entire point. To bring attention to it. There was little to none being generated through "proper channels". Now that's changed. For the better because it's more out in the open. That doesn't mean anyone and everyone who agrees with it being ridiculous is a some kind of idealist, blind to the reality of the world. They just think this is dumb and wrong. Which it is.You can't just throw a label on those people, that's all besides the main point anyway. There were hundreds that showed up after that video was posted, not just that little group of people.

Ok, so there is actually a law forbidding dancing????

I had no fucking idea.

I will say now in hind-site that the cops did their job and where being provoked. But certainly, they could have explained their position more clearly to those questioning them.

Isn't there more important issues to worry about in this country and I mean that from both perspectives.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

You guys and gals fail to see the truth. Dancing is the movement of the devil. Dancing is anti god.

Yah I went there. I believe ALL threads on here should turn into religion based threads.

But yah..dancing is indeed the movement of the devil.
