Nah, knew enough about him that he was the weakest link on a great Oline, much like Kreutz after they made the rule that stopped him from doing his crazy, possessed hand gesture pre-snap.

Nonsense. Van Horne was the weakest link. Thayer was a fine OL

And I hate to break it to an adoring son, but your dad don't know shit about the Bears

Rory, you were doing good there for awhile until you mentioned Todd Bell. You are 1 million percent WRONG. In 1984 Bell was the best player on that defense. He was geared to have another great year in 1985 but held out. He was a rising star and would have been the MVP of the 85 Bears D

Overrated=Smokey the Bear. That son of a ***** just keeps on telling people that only they can prevent forest fires rather than getting off his lazy ass and stopping a few himself.

Underrated=the giant short-faced bear. ******* weighed an estimated 3500 lbs. By contrast, the world record grizzly was 1600 and the largest polar bear was 2210.

There is no way Todd Bell was the best player on the 1984 Bears defense. I think that team still holds the NFL single-season sack record. Dent had a huge year with 17.5 sacks. Hampton also had a huge year, getting 11.5 sacks from his DT spot and earning 1st team All-Pro honors. McMichael also got 10 sacks from his DT spot. Singletary was 1st team All-Pro. So you have three Hall of Famers in their prime, two of them earning 1st team All Pro, and the third leading his conference with 17.5 sacks. But you're right, Todd Bell was the best player. 1984 was his only pro bowl appearance, he lost his starting job the following year, and intercepted 7 passes in 8 years.
With Ditka it was all about revenge and proving points. So, Bell losing his job is not related to his skill. We can debate the rest, but to say he was overrated isnt accurate. He was rated where he should be

Overrated: Cade McNown

No matter how shitty everyone thought he was, he was actually much shittier.

You must have forgot about Rick Mirer, rained for 30 days and 30 nights after we made that deal.

Wally Chambers was the best player you shitheads never heard of.

I heard of him and agree completely, also loved Waddle, throw it to the diva`s between the 10`s, fire it to Waddle when you need the 6!

good calls on Trace Armstrong and Fencik, fellas. Seems like most of the young'uns don't remember that Armstrong was a pass-rushing FORCE back in the early 90's. I would be ecstatic if Shea became 1/2 the force at DE that Trace was!

Right, because Ditka usually told Buddy Ryan what to do. Its not that the Bears won the SB without Bell, Dave Duerson was a much better player, and Bell himself was just a fringe player after his 1984 pro bowl year.

Bell was clearly more skilled than guys like Singletary, Hampton, and Dent. Thats why other NFL teams were clamoring for his services after his holdout, and Bell was a routine All-Pro selection for the next 8 years.
Duerson was better? Then why did Bell start?

Rory, chill...ommy's father told him Bell was an underrated player, and the best player on the 84-85 Bears D.

Please don't attack an adoring son because his father didn't know shit about the Bears.

I think Waddle is over rated because of the chin game. He gets a lot of love from chicago fans.

For frame of reference.Tom Waddle, in his 5 years in the league, managed to amass 150 more yards, and 50 more receptions than Calvin Johnson got... in 15 starts last year.

Waddle is a great guy with a lot of heart..... but he stank.

I wouldn't call Waddle overrated, people just liked the guy because he was tough and looked like an average guy. Most people realize he wasn't a very good player. Not sure how it can be overrated, sorry.

I don't think Waddle "stank", but it used to drive me nuts when announcers like Madden would drone on and on about how tough Waddle was, then they would cut to Waddle on sidelines missing play after play "recovering" from a big hit. Waddle was productive for 3 years, and actually led the Bears in receiving once (after Wendell Davis got injured). I thought that was kind of neat, then I saw that Devin Hester has led the Bears in receiving twice...TWICE!

That right there is how he can be over rated.

As far as him leading the team in receiving... I didn't know that. I looked it up and you are right- led the team with 552 yards in 93!
That was conways rookie year.

I remember during Conways career, he was the only Bear to ever have back to back thousand yard seasons. then Booker did it shortly thereafter.
Marshall is gonna hit that mark by week 11 this year.
